I've seen some members' icons here and I "get" some of them but not others. Anyone care to share what their icons mean?
As for me, I've got a red pill & blue pill icon. Yes, it's from The Matrix, my favorite movie. And yes, I said my favorite movie. I love the movies that mess with your head, throw twists at you, and have an escapist theme. It was the right movie at the right time and I was in the right frame of mind when I saw it. That rush I got from watching it the SECOND time has, so far, been unmatched.

Hi rmarkd! What's that dish with the pig's blood, and you dip the sweet steamed bread in it? Yum! I had that at someone's New Year party... I'd heard about it before and always wanted to try it. The hostess had laid out a spectacular buffet of Western holiday foods, and I was pretty full, but then I wandered into the kitchen and saw a small crowd of younger Fillipino guests gathered around a foil baking pan. I said, "Hey that's the dish I was looking for!" and joined in...
Whose icons are you wondering about? Mine's obvious, right? It's Totoro from the film My Neighbor Totoro! |

Mark, mine's from one of my favorite movies as well, Fritz Lang's Metropolis. The guy with the eyebrows to rival Jack Black's is Rudolf Klein-Rogge as Rotwang, one of cinema's great mad scientists (though Rotwang isn't all that mad, actually). He's the one who transforms the robot into the 'bad' Maria so that.... well, it's a long story.
One of the things I liked about this image is that he seems to be saying, "You wanna mess with me?" But at the same time, it's so over the top you can't possibly take the threat seriously. A little crazed, a little ironic... when I saw it, I thought: that's the one. |

| My icon is farily obvious but does have a good story behind it. When I met my wife she was working for the U.S. Peace Corps. While living in Poland her landlords told her basically "here, take this cat that was left by the last voulenteer or we go get rid of her". Being the cute and charming princess the cat is she was immediatly addopted. Her name is Kicza (Key-Cha) which is Polish for Kitty. We didn't name her but we love her. |

My Five Favorite Custom Icons:
5. Syntax
4. dh22 - It's like a dog, but it's blue.
3. glamarama - Beautifully composed. An artist who know how to fill her canvas. Bravo.
2. thelonious - don't under-estimate the kitsch appeal of dictionary art.
1. postmod - Brilliant. and cute. |

Mine is a beagle, my favorite dog. It's blue, my favorite color. I drew it using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. It's become my personal logo, which I use on my website.
There is nothing particularly spiritual or thought provoking about it. Maybe in the future I'll think about animating it. |

| rmarkd! My 7 year old daughter (who's seen the first Matrix movie, when it came out and when it was on TV) saw your icon and thought they were jellybeans! I reminded her of the choice Morpheus gave Neo, and she said, "Oh, that..." |

OOPS! Sorry 'bout that hiccup. I'm downloading something BIG and everything else is so sluggish I must have hit the post button twice or something.
My favorite member icons (we should have a custom icon museum!) are APathos and IronS.
Actually APathos is a staffer, and as such his icon is a brilliant demonstration of the power of minimalism. All you see is the GC Official Green Halo. What is he saying? Is he as powerful as God? Is he a Zen philosopher? Does he just not care? Note that the standard interface doesn't allow you to NOT pick an icon when you create an account. He chose to put nothing there (I think...)
IronS is a fellow anime character icon. I thought it was some "tough girl" I didn't recognize, but apparently it's Inu Yasha with black hair. I think it's PERFECT for the equally strong sounding member name, and fits with IronS's online persona based on reading the board posts. Or maybe I'm just projecting... images are so suggestive, even tiny ones!
One that needs improvement is hneline1's icon. What IS that anyway? I guess it's an anime character but it's so tiny it's hard to tell who. Someone on a horse in front of a full moon? Thanks hnelly, I've gone cross-eyed again looking at your icon while writing this! |

Thanks, hamano, for your kind words! Yep, this is the human Inu Yasha (being a half-demon, he turns human one day a month).
hneline1's icon, I believe, is Sesshomaru, Inu Yasha's full-blooded demon older half-brother (same father).

Most anime icons (and DVDs, for that matter) look kinda same-y to me, and GreenCine definitely has a surfeit of anime icons (and DVDs, lists, and reviews for that matter), so it's unusual when an anime icon catches my attention. I particularly like Sappho (whatever happened to her?) and chaosisorder. I was also impressed by hamano's back when Totoro only blinked once; I don't mind it blinking all the time now, it's just that it was trippier when it blinked only once and you weren't sure you saw it at all.
Hamano's isn't the only one I think shouldn't have changed; I miss dpowers' frog icon and pelikan's stylized crudely-rendered pelican.
Apathos was going to be on my favories list, but I decided it belonged on the 'most disturbing icon' list with MrBlingBling and FOlmstead .

| Oh, and I totally agree with AKrizman's #1 vote for postmod. I smile every time I see postmod, and Totoros love to grin! I still wanna know if the eyes and mouth are made of dried currants. Or mini-chocolate chips? |

Sheesh, muppets can be so nitpicky! I downloaded FOlmstead's icon and opened it. He/she has the loop set to "forever" and the interframe delay set to "as fast as possible".
It works better when the eye is set to the "open" frame for 6 seconds followed by a 1/50 sec. long "blink" frame. Or maybe it's more disturbing if the eye is normally closed, then opens once in a while... |

It's called Dinuguan. I'm impressed. I'm half Filipino and can't eat that stuff. Then again, I was brought up on McDonalds...
And yeah, I know your icon. Totoro... God I wish I had seen that movie when I was a child. It's still fun to watch as an adult, but as a child, it's magical. Reminds me of one of my favorite movies, Who Framed Roger Rabbit (?). It's still a great movie to watch, but I'll never watch it with the same frame of mind as when I first saw it as a kid.

| Damned if I know what my icon is about, for some reason I just thought that it would be funny if King Kong were made to look like the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken. In addition to King Kong and Kentucky Fried Chicken, it might also be a reference to Dr. Strangelove since that film has a Major Kong (wouldn't an animated icon of Major Kong riding the bomb be cool?). I didn't really have that in mind when I came up with my member name (which predated the icon, I was originally a Godzilla), maybe it was an unconscious thing. |

BTW, I like it when there's a bunch of Hamano posts together which create a column of blinking Totoros!
