Red vs. Blue is an animated series that uses the videogame Halo to animate scripts that actors write and perform. It's pretty well-written and funny.

"Machinima" refers to the concept of using a videogame to stage your movie (a quick Google search brings up Machinima.com).

It's just another way to bring filmmaking to the masses, I suppose.

I've heard a little about machinima, but have never had a chance to check it out. Unfortunatly I'm on dial-up, so downloading any sort of clip is too time consuming for an impatient bastard like me... or is it? Whaddaya think? Would it be worth the time for me to download some examples of machinima? Or is there a better way?

Welll... Red vs. Blue season 1 is available on DVD. Maybe we should drop a line to dvdrequest@greencine.com.

Not to worry. I am in contact with them. Ideally, we'll have the first volume in the days ahead.

Wow, Gradalis, thanks! Greencine's competitors can't touch that kind of response.

From redvsblue.com:

The Blood Gulch Chronicles tell the story of the men stationed in a desolate outpost as they fight for control of the universe's most strategic dry creek bed in the middle of a box canyon.

The team is profiled/interviewed in the current issue of the Austin Chronicle, too.

Oh, thanks for that link. So that's what these guys look like. I've been watching season 2 and I must say I don't think it's as good as season 1. Either I wasn't in the right mood or they are suffering from a sophomore slump.

As a technical sidenote, Divx player asked me to upgrade to version 2.5.3 and it promptly crashed when I tried to watch an avi. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, I downloaded the latest Directx and nothing helped. The solution? Watch the movies in media player or Realone Player instead.

Wow, they're going to show Red vs Blue season 1 at the Alamo Drafthouse!

SXSW Interactive will present Red vs Blue: The Blood Gulch Chronicles at midnight Monday, March 15, at the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown (409 Colorado). See www.sxsw.com/interactive for more information.

Those RvsB folks never respond. I tried for the third time this morning (naturally, I will let you know what I discover). Meanwhile, I'll be in Austin this weekend. I expect to track them down, one way or another.

Third time is a charm. We'll be drinking together at SXSW. Expect the discs to finally appear when I return on St. Patrick's Day!

Ha! That should be fun. Those guys seem to have a well-developed sense of humor. It will be intresting to see if they parlay this into more traditional filmmaking arenas.

Expect the discs to finally appear...
Make that "by the end of the month." Unexpected delays. The discs will have to be shipped here, unfortunately.

I looked, and there it was in the new releases list.

Redvsblue.com joined in the April fools festivities yesterday and posted what they said was their "last episode ever" (episode 28.5), along with a link to the email address of the guy that plays Pvt. Donut. I'm guessing he wasn't a happy camper when he checked his email.

Thanks for the great information on Red vs. Blue. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have run across this otherwise and this "machinima" concept is pretty interesting. It's impressive that they've been able to generate 28+ interesting episodes within the limitations of the media.

Ahh.. maybe I can re-learn all those years of highschool spanish from listening to Lopez :)

Ahh yes, Red vs. Blue. First time I saw it was at one of my favoritest of places: Game Stop. I literally almost died laughing. It's like Super Troopers funny.
