Anyone have suggestions for what the best computer 3D animation program would be? I'm very techy (programmer), and am interested in realistic human animations as well as cartoonish creature animations.

If you're thinking about making a machinima, I've heard Unreal 2 is the best engine for that. Check out some info at http://www.machinima.com/ .

If you're thinking of making a Pixar-type thing, I don't think there's any good programs for general users. Of course if you want to spend a lot of money there's probably something.

There's also Poser, from Curious Labs: http://www.curiouslabs.com/

There seems to be a lot of pre-built "stuff" for Poser -- hair styles, props, settings, clothes, etc. See, for example: http://poserworld.com/

But it gets pretty expensive pretty quickly if you try to buy every bit of clothing, facial hair, prop, etc.
