We posted this question on Yahoo Answers but thought we might as well open it up here, too!
Who are the best Mom Characters in Movies?
Your favorite Movie Moms! They can be idealized moms, terrible moms, crazy or wonderful or both, but they should be the ones you always remember. |

I'm finding it hard to remember GOOD movie moms, all I can come up with are the evil movie moms/step moms like the the one from Sleeping Beauty. |

Not on DVD, and not a mom, but...
Christine Lahti in Housekeeping takes care of her dead sister's two kids. It was a strange but fun little film. I think I would have enjoyed being raised by Aunt Sylvie (Lahti). |

Talk about "a mothers love..." Her performance STILL gives me chills. If you have not seen it, or if it's been a while, I suggest you chek it out.
Also JAMIE LEE CURTIS in MOTHERS BOYS deserves an honorable mention.

Good suggestions all! And they can certainly be "bad" mothers, just good characters!

Definitely. Interesting, too, to think of all of Anjelica Huston's mother characters, not just that one. How about Agnes Browne? Or the Addams Family movies? (She was born to play Morticia!) Each one incredibly different but all worthy roles.

| I gotta throw out Jennifer Coolidge as "Stifler's Mom" in American Pie. She's a hilarious comedian anyway, but she plays the "cougar" to a tee. |

Chobits has a Good Mother and she is voiced by Inoue Kikiko the most kawaii voice in all of Japan! You may known her as Belldandy.
See was also funny in "Clannad", which I don't believe has be licensed for region 1 yet.
And in Air (TV) we have a woman who seems to be a good person but has to be Mom and she is the first to admit that she is not good at it.
And as for Yui Ibuki, she is about as good a Mom as Yehweh is a father to Jesus. Some would blame her husband, but she went right along with him. But still a better a mom than Asuka's - these last two from "Neon Genesis Evangelion" (have mercy!)
All recommended for all otaku! |

Apologies -- I wasn't paying attention.
Good example of an understanding and loving mother

| Well, there's always Sophie Von Essenbeck in La Caduta degli dei, though -- another loving mother |

Okay, here we go:
Erin's Best Movie Moms list, organized by mom archetype, not by film.
Which types would you add? And who would you add under each category?
There's no way she could capture every great (and not so great) mom character through film history, but her take is pretty darned good, imho. |

A couple more I thought of for Erin's list, as far as examples of Bad and/or Psycho Moms, were:
Piper Laurie's mom in CARRIE. Man, that still upsets me even just thinking about her.
Anjelica Huston THE GRIFTERS. Crazy Oedipal love! |
