I've rant before on this in years past but I just discovered that classical semi-hentai title, "Urotsukidoji I: Legend of the Overfiend (1989)" is not only out of print but not available on all three of my DVD rental services.
And I have read that Google is suing for loose the chains of the content nazi's to end this out of print crap for books and make print-by-demand an affordable reality. RIGHT ON!
Computers were born to copy stuff. Making backups has all been a required thang for ANYONE with a computer.
Now, I would favor a use or lose it approach - if a copyright holder chooses to stop making their work available, then it enters the public domain.
But I will compromise. Just allow rental services to keep backups and register the number they can circulate by the number of licenses they purchase, at cost no greater than the retail price of the DVD, and when they have one fall in that black hole, then they can make a copy and put in the mix.
Out of print is a choice and one I hate. Especially for a classic that wiped the giggling smerk of the hentai market, celebrates the Great Tentacle Rape Fetish and has lots of nice violence to go with the sex.
No one is gonna make you watch it. But I wanna.
FREEDOM!
