hmmm.. pretty strong showing for asian cinema.. now if we can get our hands on some of these movies SOON, that'd be even better. Anyone have any inside info on whether Farenheit 9/11 was not distributed here because of the obviously controversial political views? (conspiracy theories?? ??)
Not to take away from the achievement but given the current opinion of the US by the world community, I wonder if the film voting had been biased at all by the anti-Bush administration message. I'd be very interested in seeing that one sooner or later..
(way to go Old Boy! A Grand Prix isn't too shabby!) |

They need to find distributors first which usually requires more festival exposure, though a win at Cannes doesn't guaranty a US distributor, it certainly helps, though I doubt Nobody Knows will have a problem finding distribution.

There are lots of rumors and conspiracy theories, but the Weinsteins are working on a solution and hope for a July 4 release date.
The movie, as of last night, was technically still without a distributor. Last month, Walt Disney, the distributor of the movie through its Miramax division, had blocked the release of the documentary, citing its politically divisive content. This left "Fahrenheit 9/11" high and dry as it approached its scheduled July 2 opening date. Harvey Weinstein, Miramax's co-president, has vowed to distribute the movie one way or another, whether by buying the film and distributing it independently or releasing it through a third party. Negotiations between Weinstein and Disney are ongoing. --Desson Thomson, Washington Post

International sentiment is against the war in Iraq, and probably half the US population is against the war as well. I thought perhaps the anti-war anti-Bush message swayed votes, but there's reason to believe that the film stood on its own merits and I'd prefer to think that's the reason why the jurors voted for Moore's film.
President Quentin Tarantino (USA), Emmanuelle Béart (France), Edwidge Danticat (Haiti), Tilda Swinton (UK), Kathleen Turner (USA), Benoît Poelvoorde (Belgium), Jerry Shatzberg (USA), Tsui Hark (Hong Kong) and Peter Von Bagh (Finland) are the chief conspirators!
They should be applauded. |

If there is a conspiracy, it's that I wouldn't put it past the Weinsteins to concoct this whole spat with Eisner over F911 to generate press coverage and general buzz to get a) F911 into more theaters AND b) get more butts into those theater seats. Look how controversy helped the box office for Mel Gibson's The Passion! Naturally, this is going to be the most profitable Moore film ever! |

Ehh.. I suppose but I thought that Old Boy was going to win the Palme d'Or so I'm only about 80% satisfied. Since Im Kwon Taek won best director a couple of years ago, I thought it was all set up nicely. I guess the next one will do the trick.
It's good though that Cannes has started looking more at korean cinema than in the past. Venice and Berlin have been looking "our" way from much earlier on. Jumping on the bandwagon I see. Well, there's always next year! |

one reason i read about is that miramax is owned by disney, who's based out of orlando, fl. the state that just happens to have jeb bush, brother of the mental midget george dubya, as governor. and i guess disney is either afraid of any repercussions, or backs that evil family. either way, this film NEEDS to be released!

| No offense Eoliano, but why do I come across NYTimes links (here and elsewhere on the internet) so often when a subscription is required to read the linked articles? |

I believe *registration* is required, but not subscription. I believe this because I'm not a NYT subscriber either, but I did register for online viewing and can now log in to read these articles. And with cookies you can then just go in automatically.
I highly recommend registering, it should still be free. Someone wanna back me up on this?

Craig is absolutel correct, unlike the LATimes, no subscription to the print edition is required, and registration takes less than a New York minute! If you're not interested, well then, don't bother.

| According to The New York Times, the Weinsteins have personally acquired the rights to Fahrenheit 9/11 with Lion's Gate and Focus Features closing in on an agreement for the distribution rights. |
