"After letting him enjoy his stir-fried squid, I peppered him with questions."

interviews should always be "subject to taste."

Hee hee. My first draft had it "I sauteed him with questions" but that didn't work. As long as something makes the author giggle, then it just has to stay in. ;-)

Hey thanks! It was fun.
It won't get the search hits that the Lord of the Rings articles brought us but I'm glad people are reading it. :-)

When I saw the subject line for this topic, I thought I was going to see a gaggle of GCers talking about hentai.

No, seriously, I love this piece. There are several bits of the conversation between Craig and Mark Kitchell that soar, but I get especially excited when MK talks about "relevance". His decision was so right, so very, very smart. It makes Berkeley in the Sixties relevant always, not just for the moment he undoubtedly had the urge to speak directly to. As we scramble to figure out a way how to react to or maybe even contribute to a cutting off of the seemingly inevitable ten years on, another viewing of his film can't hurt. Not at all.

tentacles and hentai.

WHAT IS HENTAI?

i need help. there are two areas of movies that i don't know anything about - horror and hentai. i've seen tentacles in blue seed, wicked city, and urusei yatsura (actual octopus), okay but that's not enough.

i have urotsukidoji in my queue but is that really hentai? i mean it's kind of everything, i've heard. what exactly is hentai and is it different from softcore and is there any of it that's got redeeming facets or maybe just artsy pretensions.

make a suggestion i'm open to anything. ha ha. i mean, i'll watch anything. ha ha. i mean. heh.

Hentai really bugs me out. In my (admittedly limited) experience, it is different from more vanilla softcore porn in that it usually has sci-fi trappings, and a great deal of the sex involves rape. If you have a fetish for Lovecraftian monsters raping young women, you'll probably swoon for Urotsukidoji. I haven't seen a lot of hentai, but some of the model hentai titles I've seen are the Overfiend titles you mentioned, as well as La Blue Girl and Cool Devices. Of the bunch, Overfiend had the most actual story content to it.

Apropos of nothing, I was tickled recently to notice that a tagger in San Francisco has taken the moniker of HENTAI. So far I've seen the tag on a sidewalk and on a USPS blue mailbox.

So there's that.

also there is a large octopus balloon in revolutionary girl utena, too, come to think of it, and it's a pretty good joke, too.

The term "hentai" simply refers to Japanese pornographic anime in general. The subgenre of which you speak is often called "tentacle porn," with "Urotsukidoji" and "La Blue Girl" being seminal (pun intended) examples.

There are dozens of sites that serve up this material, as well as thousands of fan-generated hentai versions of popular non-pornographic anime ("Sailor Moon," "Dragon Ball," and "Pokemon" for example); yet another legacy of having Photoshop on every computer.

Much of this stuff comes across as a crazed blend of the amusingly outrageous and genuinely disturbing, but its viewpoint of women (a kind of steroid-enhanced über-objectification that often removes consensuality from the picture) is as bad as it gets.

wait, now i'm remembering something. H. echhi. ecchi?

meaning general hentai, or tentacruelty.

you saw the movie with the dog and the stuffed pikachu, right, on the website. that doesn't count, right.

can you think of a few non-tentacle titles that are some light-duty, some heavy-duty, for comparison. for example a friend gave me a copy of aika: naked missions last year as uh, payback, actually (for giving him and his religious scholar sweetie the devil in miss jones for christmas - it's a classic film! really!). aika's nothing. but if you drew a line from there to la blue girl, what's between them?

hmmm what your describing with Aika is eechi anime. Meaning T & A. Basically aika is a panty anime. Its a genre not to be confused by anything like hentai. Soft hentai or hard. Since I notice many green ciners in the dark about hentai I shall make a list. A GRAND LIST of hentai because many of you guys have just seen urtro(sp) la blue girl and Cool devices. ALl three are not good examples of hentai. THE New la blue girl is good but I believe you are referring to the old series. GREEncine carries a ton of hentai. Try some out after viewing my list.
