i know about the good girl. it's here, it's on DVD. i wanted to know about what was showing at the rotterdam festival! i wanted to know what people were talking about!

the award winners tell a story for themselves: an amnesty international film prize. a "new discovery" prize shared three ways by argentinian, south korean and russian films, two of which were directed by women. a handful of other films by people i'd never heard of before!!! higher and higher for weerasethakul (whose recent mysterious object at noon is out on DVD). and a new guy maddin movie!

350-plus films are enough alone to choke any cineaste, but when you add experimental sidebars like Exploding Cinema and What is Cinema?, late night "talk shows" with fest guests, various IFFR and privately-sponsored cocktail parties and dinners and "legal" hash ...

maybe another writer went to that festival.

i'm sorry MR got sick, i did that this week myself, it sucks.

Yep, frankly, Mark's illness threw a wrench in our plans. I think that's obvious. But: More is on the way from Rotterdam, including pix.

What's more, coverage of the Berlinale begins very soon and both Mark and I will be fanning out all over it with our notepads, recorders and cameras. Nina Rehfeld, too, of course, though we may run some of her interviews a bit later.

In other words: I feel your pain. But we're about to make up for it, I hope!

i was making a joke this weekend about the giraffalo, a massive spotted herd animal with thick fur, horns, and a neck like a lead sewer pipe. (it's native to the city of jenin in palestine.) the most unusual behavior of this animal is how it stops running when startled - it falls flat on its face. (the animals sleep in groups, standing up. they lean their heads together for balance.)

in zoological circles, to be "giraffaloed" is to be jetlagged and sick off the airplane and have important business to attend to.

it may be a relativity thing. the fast you run, the thicker your neck gets, until you're too top heavy to stay upright in an emergency stop. i'm not sure.
