This whole idea of the "straight to DVD" release as a positive alternative for indie filmmakers that I toy with in "The Next Smash" may be even closer to actually coming about than I'd thought. And I was pretty darn confident it'd be happening very, very soon.
In his latest column at FilmThreat.com, Chris Gore (yes, again) makes an even stronger case. Two points stand out here:
1. The industry has evolved to such a point, Gore argues, that, for all practical purposes, indie filmmakers have no other choice. And frankly, he's very convincing on this point. Got a nice little $30,000 film? Your chances of getting it distributed by "traditional" means ("traditional" in quotes because those means have always been in flux) are: "slim to none." The DVD may very well be your only shot.
2. This one's much more important: "FilmThreat.com has just recently started its own DVD label." That's putting your money where your mouth is, and while I don't see any details up on the site about this yet, you can bet I'm asking him about it right now. |

As it turns out, when I contacted him for more info, I was one of about 500 people with the same level of aroused curiosity. Chris Gore has sent out a mass mailing informing us that he'll be letting us know more about this at the site. Soon. |
