Have grown up in India. I have a different take on a recommended list. If you were to watch 5, I would suggest: Ashoka, Bombay, Maya Memsaab, Jaane bhi do yaaro and Nayakan
The complete list: New Bollywood Ashoka: A book on an Indian king who gave up violence after winning many wars. Dil Chahta Hai: A road trip\growing up movie. Hera Pheri: A comedy on a getting rich scheme gone wrong.
Modern classics Akele Hum Akele Tum: A bachelor who ends up with kids and a business. Bombay: A love story set during the bombay riots. Praahar\Parinda: With the actor, Nana Patekar, the former is a army person in modern life, while the later is a gangster movie set in bombay with excellent acting, camera work and directing. Maine pyaar kiya: A blockbuster and a love story, just here cause at a certain time, I watched this 10 or was it 8 times when it was playing at a local movie theater. Chaalbaaz: Twins in a comedy movie. Masoom:A child growing up with a foster family Andaz Apna Apna: Another comedy movie with a get rich scheme.
Indian art films Ankush Arth Maya Memsaab: About a women's love. Jaane bhi do yaaro: A hilarious movie about 2 photographers and politics. Mirch Masala
Classics Padosan: A comedy movie about a man faking singing and getting lesson to make his neighbor fall in love with him. Umrao Jaan: A movie based back in time, around 100 years back. Anand: Illness, friend, etc Chupke chupke: A comedy Agnipath\Shakti\Sholay\Silsila:Among the better Amitabh Bachan movies, Agnipath is a gangster movie, shakti is on father-son relationship, Sholay is a classic and Silsila is about love outside marriage. Nayakan: A tamil movie, a gritty godfather kind of tale set in Mumbai with Kamal Hassan. Shalimar:A diamond and thief, was a joint production.
Early hollywood Bandini Sangam: Raj kapoor's love triangle move. Mother India Gumnaam: A drama and thriller. Pyaasa\Kagaz ke pool: Guru dutt in moving, though mostly tragic roles.

| I watched Kassan. It will be my last Indian movie. I hate the over the top colors, musical interludes, cheesy stereotypes, and pondering over life's hardships. |

| I would have put "Lagaan" in the list for sheer enjoyment. Straightforward plot but totally absorbing. |

Um... I think amit is talking about a different Aamir Khan film, which isn't available at GreenCine, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. It's a really cute film with a very young Juhi Chawla (she was the sister-in-law in Paheli).
Also, underdog, there's a broken link in the Primer... This version should work.... DVDs devoted solely to music videos - the best musical scenes from various films (Bollywood Hits Vols. 1-3 is one such example), in addition to the many soundtracks and compilations now more readily available on compact disc.
Actually those music compilations are not very good. The EROS compilations are much better, with lots of Shahrukh Khan videos. GreenCine should get some of those. |

Thanks Pooja!
We're actually planning on going back to all the primers very soon to update any links that may now be updated. Feel free to send any you catch to editor@greencine.com, though. I'll fix the Bollywood one now. More soon!
