"Just as jazz is the one uniquely American music form, the Western may be the one truly American film genre and, as such, has appropriately reflected eleven decades of American moods."
The primer: Westerns. Discuss! |

This is a great list, and it shows how incredibly far-reaching the genre really is-- people who think of westerns as two Johns (Wayne and Ford), and Monument Valley are selling them awfully short. I share your affection for Red River, but I think my favorite Wayne western is Rio Bravo, since it was there that I made the stunning discovery of his sense of humor about himself. (Plus, I mean, Dean Martin, people. Dean Martin!)
Finally, a little nitpick-- since Seven Samurai is mentioned, you might also point out Yojimbo's connection to A Fistful of Dollars. Watching the two films back-to-back is a great primer on the differences between Kurosawa and Leoni. |

Agreed, and appreciate the feedback!
Y'know, I had Yojimbo/Fistful in there in an earlier draft and I took it out for some reason. maybe it was a space limitation, maybe it was a space out or brain limitation. But at any rate, yes, you're right, it should be mentioned, but at least we have this space to make amends for such oversights.

One film I feel should be on this list is "The Ox Bow Incident". It is so dark for its time. Perhaps "Persued" fills the 'dark little movie' niche, but Ox Bow came earlier and is sparer.
I remember watching that movie as a kid and thinking "He's not really going to hang is he?"
I couldn't sleep that night. |

You're right, and the main reason(s) I ignored it when I wrote that primer is because a) it wasn't out on DVD at the time and b) I'd never seen it!
Now it's on DVD and now I'm going to make a point of seeing it.
I'll definitely add it to the "recommended" box after that (presumably).
Thanks for the reminder!
