Ok. First, I thought the guy who directed Shakespeare in Love was Guy Maddin. I thought Shakespeare in Love was ok, kinda pretty to look at. I thought, "Wow, this crazy avant garde type director did that movie? I should check out his stuff pre-Gwyneth."

So I rented The Guy Maddin Collection. And I also found out, ten minutes ago, that Guy Maddin did not direct Shakespeare in Love, it was John Madden. OK.

So The Guy Maddin Colelction is boring.

1) I've only watched 5 minutes or less of each movie. 2) It's really late where I am, and my attention span is shrinking fast. 3) It's boring, but in a really horrible way. The way that I know I should watch this and appreciate it. In the way that I know the scenery looks great and everything looks really cool and experimental-like but my attention is TOO SHORT right now. Grrr.

So I put on Almost Famous, The "Untitled" Director's Cut. Familiar, easy to digest at 2 in the morning. I need to stop working 12 hour days. It's making me post weird stuff like this....

but I heart GreenCine.

Here's the director you're looking for.

I think you're probably asking a lot of Guy Maddin. Even John Madden isn't John Madden, I don't see how it's possible for an ordinary Guy.

Don't feel too bad. I was shocked to discover that Orson Welles did not write The Time Machine. In fact, I refuse to believe it.

The main difference between the Maddin/Maddens is that Guy will probably never be accused of what Pauline Kael called "goddamn good taste."
John, on the other hand, has it oozing from his pores like sour-mash sweat. He probably has leather-bound editions of the complete works of Tolstoy in his bathroom.

Or to put it another way: he's like the Academy voters who gave Raging Bull's Oscar to Ordinary People.

ps Does Boiled in Lead still play every St. Paddy's Day?

That's sad... I love Guy Madden's work and have all available DVDs. "Heart of the World" is awesome!

But beware, Paul Thomas Anderson, directed, "Magnolia"

AVP: Alien Vs. Predator, was by writer/director Paul WS Anderson

Paul Thomas directed, "Debbie Does Dallas: East vs West" and about a thousand pornos

And I love "Almost Famous"
