I threw up too... champagne goes down so easy on New Year's Eve, then you get a headache, then you're running to the toilet...
This is easy... Haibane Renmei Tsukihime
Both class acts, and not silly at all. |

How about:
Wolf's Rain- no humor what-so-ever, with a very high production cost
Samurai Champloo- says director as Cowboy Bebop and better IMO (though I liked CB also)
Gankutsuou- based on the novel "The Count of Monte Cristo", has weird animation though

You didn't like Kenshin!? It is the back bone to Samurai X! Silly is a necessity of good anime/entertainment. I love anime for the stupidness. Azumanga Daioh and silliness are one and the same for example. Too silly is like Ping Pong Club. But who am I to judge.
I gave up throwing up after my 21st b-day party.
I second X-the series and Twelve Kingdoms and I add Bubblegum Crisis 2040 (some silliness, not too much) Perfect Blue Generator Gawl (some silliness but it's interesting)

Samurai X is just the name for the american dvds of Rurouni Kenshin, what you meant to say im sure is that you like the Rurouni Kenshin or Samurai X Oav and not the Tv Series.
and now you know, and knowing is half the battle. |

Try NieA Under Seven, from Yoshitoshi ABe, the artist who also did Lain, Texhnolyze, and Haibane Renmei.

I think if you gave Trigun a try, you would probably like it. It can be very silly, especially in the early episodes, but the story gets more dark as the later episodes come.
Also I think you would like:
Crest/Banner of the Stars Boogiepop Phantom Grave of the Fireflies (everybody loves it)
And there are others but I don't want to keep suggesting titles that have already been listed. |

Perfect Blue is a psychological thriller with great imagery but not much in the thrills department. Despite all the plot twists it feels painfully predictable, and why anyone gives a damn about a bubble-headed pop idol and her crappy music is beyond me. Watch live action movies like Chinatown, Vertigo, or Gilda instead.
I don't love Grave of Fireflies either, but I'm never in the mood for slow-paced movies about pride and tragedy.
On the other hand, if you like Grave of Fireflies and Perfect Blue you should look at Jin Roh, Roujin Z, and Millenium Actress. |

I dunno... I hated Perfect Blue, LOVED Jin-Roh, and liked Grave of the Fireflies... I'm lukewarm about Millenium Actress. I don't think you can lump all those together.
How about, "If you liked Perfect Blue, try Little Snow Fairy Sugar or Kaleidostar!"?? |

Collectively those movies make up a large chunk of the most mature and best received dramatic anime.
Creating genres is imprecise in gaging tastes. For example, I love the speed metal band Anthrax but I hate Megadeth. (I have a friend who insisted I shouldn't like the movie Rundown starring the Rock because I generally don't like pop music and Rundown is a pop movie. How do you react to such a stupid argument or does he have a point?)
I have no idea about Little Snow Fairy Sugar or Kaleidostar but I don't really think any of these dramatic anime relate to any of the animes on jetyi83's list other than Voices of a Distant Star. If VODS is the measuring stick, than Grave of Fireflies is probably the only close match because since it also has a wistful youth narrating the story.

Sorry to disappoint you but I still have access to the forums.
I'm going to try to avoid on line forums though, so don't worry. |
