Dang. Good movie. Beautiful visuals. Pretty good story.

Sky Blue (originally titled Wonderful Days) is a Korean production, but I figured it might as well be included here in the anime forum. I just saw the English version of it, and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The blend of cel and computer animation was a little strange at the very beginning, but it quickly smoothed out and succeeded much better than some other recent attempts like Ghost in the Shell 2. The art is just excellent.

I would have liked to have seen the Korean version, but apparently it was conceived for both languages, with an English release planned from the beginning so that it wasn't just a paste-on job after the fact. There weren't any big name actors. But (with the exception of a couple of children's voices that appear in relatively small parts) the voice talent was pretty good and certainly didn't detract from it.

I read a review that said the movie was a failure because there wasn't enough of a storyline to live up to the visuals. I have to disagree. The story was actually pretty cohesive and moved along at a good pace, moreso than many other anime features that make it to theaters here. I can't help but think that the reviewer just dusted off a review for some other anime film and didn't bother to actually watch this one, since trashing anime for lack of story seems like the "in" thing among reviewer types.

Anybody else seen it and would like to comment?

I also saw a trailer for Steamboy by Katsuhiro Otomo (director of Akira. It looks amazing. There was no dialogue in the trailer, just music and action, so there was no opportunity to get a sense of how Patrick Stewart, Anna Paquin and Alfred Molina actually do in their voice roles in this film. Still, the visuals alone look good enough to get my ass in the seat when it hits my local theater.

I saw it a long time ago, maybe a year ago or more, dont remember, but I thought the visuals were amazing, definitely worth the watch. The story was pretty much meh I agree with the reviewer there.

But unless you are watching on a 13" 1985 tv I suggest you watch this and just enjoy it for what it is, a great looking mindless action film.

Its really good for what it is.
