Oh, I guess this isn't going to work... Oh well. It works in personal mail, but not on the discussion boards...

Personal mail as in the GC mail? They seem to have slightly and subtly different straight text to html programming. (One noticable difference is responding to gc mail doesn't convert previous line breaks so the quoted mail runs together for example.) What were you trying to do? It looks promising. I've found with "special effects" that if you preview and then go back they get translated and stop working.

What were you trying to do?

出来るけどちょっと難しいです・・・
俺にゼツなボードでするとプリヴィユをする;それでこっなこと見る:
「その後」
その後でノトパードにカットアンドパスト;全部「&」わ「&」で換える。それでグリーンシーンのバード分かる。

I should know more of this but I don't. I'm a horrible scholar.

In the entire paragraph I see the kanji for "exit", I see chotto (a little), I see miru (to see/ to watch), I see the kanji for later (that one later?)... notobaado?!... katto...an...do...ba...su...to... GREENCINE... fun karu? Please translate... I'm soooo pathetic... my sister is laughing at me right now.

haha 'sallright. Without a handy-dandy tool like Rikaichan I wouldn't have been able to use the right kanji for any of it (I don't think I managed to get it all right anyway)
Basically, my method for writing kanji to the GC boards is like this:
I first type the Japanese text into another BBS system and hit "preview"; the text entry window changes from nice-looking kanji to Roman text using &'s and #'s and numeric code (ironically becomming gibberish to my eyes). I take this fancy code text and "Cut and paste" into Notepad where I replace all the &'s with "&", then I paste that whole block of text into the GC post window and post it.
(on a normal font size I can't tell the difference between the circle in any "p" syllable to the little " in a "b" syllable. sorry if it looks like I'm telling you to "cut and baste"; this is the internet, not a turkey.)

On the other hand, and oddly enough, you don't need to do ANYTHING special for kanji to work in private mail or the GC search bar (although I don't think any kanji search will turn up results); that's why Hamano's post looks so funky. the boards are different somehow. And even with my fancy method, kanji didn't seem to work in the topic field (which is probably just as well, since in an alphabetical sort kanji always falls to the bottom)

(that is, checking at every step with Rikaichan to make sure I'm actually typing what I mean to. It can read and translate text you type yourself so if you make a mistake you can just backspace and fix it right there. All hail Rikaichan! I wish I had a program that would do the same thing outside Firefox)

Cool! But time consuming... you need to input the numeric code that represents each Japanese character...

OK, here's using this thread for some good instead of evil.... a correction for jross3's Japanese message. First of all, you don't need Ore (I) at the beginning there. Instead I used "Mazu" which means "first". And "other board" is "betsu no boodo" not "zettsu na"...

まずべつのボードで書いてプレビューをする。すると、こんなふうに見える。
「その後」
次は、それをノートバッドにカット・アンド・ペーストして、「&」は全部「&」に換える。それをグリーンシーンのボードにポストする。

The "wa" in this case is actually the character for "ha"...

Ooh, rikaichan is really cool! I bet it'll be handy when I come upon a kanji word I don't know on a webpage... jross, if you look at the "corrected" version of the instructions you posted with rikaichan, you'll notice that words like "paste" and "preview" will now display properly. However, "notepad" and "pad" don't seem to be in rikaichan's dictionary, although "note" is.

Hmmm... on the other hand, if underdog installs rikaichan now he'll know exactly what I wrote...

underdog, stay away from rikaichan! It's the worst kind of malware designed to corrupt every file on your hard drive!

(Brief tangent: Ignore if you wish. I've always been fascinated by the philosophical question as to whether phrases or words can be obscene or inapropriate if the people hearing them either don't understand them or ... simple don't find them obscene or offensive. What does it matter if underdog knows what you wrote, when it'd only be tabu if it were understood by all. i.e. in english.

This issue came up a month or so ago with justice Scallia's finger-chin gesture consistantly reported as "obscene" and then discussion as to whether it was "obscene".)

is a more archaic kanji form for

both of which are pronounced "tou".

水銀
"Sui" is water or liquid and "gin" is silver. Quicksilver.

sui-gin-tou
