The other thread got to page 12, so I'm continuing it here.

I think the tendency (like the ANN Encyclopedia) is to label it as "slice of life"... some of those sim video games can be called "slice of life" as well. I think "slice of life" is just an euphemism for voyeurism, and considering the personalities and appearances of the Azumanga gang, I'd say an honest appraisal is "harem"... the trouble is that so many people only associate the word "harem" with negative connotations, which is what's misleading about it.

xxxHOLiC 18 - A very nice episode! Maybe everything is finally starting to gel together for me now. The funky graphic style worked really well in this episode, and we're finally getting a glimpse of how Youko is going to "help" Watanuki meet his destiny (and the role Doumeki is going to play). Some of the accumulated side characters seem to have more extensive roles to play as well.

There were some very "Spirited Away" moments in this episode, including some Ghibli-ish background music. I think I even saw a Totoro in the parade of 100 demons.

And I still love the "new" air guitar ED sequence. Brilliant and cute! Bravo to CLAMP and the Ayakashi Studies Group!

Innocent Venus 4 - Well, this show improved a bit in Ep 4, some nice Phantom vs. Ex-Phantom action. The gay pirate guy turned out to be an ex-Phantom himself, the former sub-commander no less. He was even better at hand-to-hand than Joe. Another plus, Gora got beat up quite a bit in this one.

I can't help it, hamano! I'm downloading the FROP eps of Ouran. No one else is putting them out and I'm jonesing!

And where's Nana too? Gah, I can't get my anime fix.

Yeah, badly translated is still better than nothing.

That's fine... I'm just warning y'all that you're not getting exactly the same show if you read those subtitles. A lot of times they miss completely.

> And where's Nana

She's on Bokura ga Ita... I'm all caught up to Ep. 7 (with Chinese subtitles!) Some very dark sad angstish stuff is right around the corner now! Don't you hate it when a relationship seems to be going so perfectly, and you think he's told you everything about himself, but then there's this HUGE awful secret? You peel that last scab and then it's all a BLOODY MESS????

Speaking of blood, I'm right now downloading Honey&Clover 8!! BLOOD! BLOOD EVERYWHERE! I can hardly wait.... Oh, the voice actor for Takemoto was in a car accident and went into a coma. He had done all the work up to Ep. 11, but they had to get a substitute seiyuu for the final episode! Maybe the show is cursed.

No, it's SHOUJO ROMANCE that is cursed! Where did all this blood come from?

Just watched Ep 1 of Bokura Ga Ita and it looks alright. The comparison to Kare Kano is very apt and I suppose it must be intentional on the creators' part. It lacks a lot of the wit of Kare Kano so far, and the main characters seem more generic.

I've only seen an ep or two of Honey and Clover. The watercolor style looks similar but otherwise I haven't seen enough to comment.

Since youtube is so convenient, and I am out of dvds to watch right now, I might go ahead and watch a few more. Definitely not up to Kare Kano's level as yet though.

It's more soapy shoujo than KareKano, with a gentler sort of introspection. In that respect it's more like Honey&Clover. KareKano was originally more traditional shoujo soap in its manga form, but Hideaki Anno added a lot of his own "genius" to the anime version. This led to clashes between Anno and Masami Tsuda, the mangaka, that eventually caused Anno's departure halfway through... the usual GAINAX mess!

Oh yeah...this does look a lot more like the bits of the Kare Kano manga that I've seen. Guess I miss that old time "genius".

There was a really funny scene in Nana 19, where Hachi is explaining Yasu's hidden charms to Junko and her BF what's his name. "Sure he's a skinhead but inside he's so different, and special..." All that while she's peeling and eating a BOILED EGG! ROTFL!!!!! Hachi finally gets her bone for being such a good dog, too.

I saw that the first fansub for Kemonozume is out, but my advice would be to wait until ep 2 is also available before downloading it. I think it'll be easier to get into the groove of the show if you take it about 2 eps at a time...

Kemonozume 03 - OK, I've decided that this is the best new show this season by far. The script is better than 95% of the live action J-horror movies out there right now. There's a chance that Chevalier D'Eon might be a good show but since they've only had one episode released so far I think that being the best is a long shot, based on what they put up there so far. There's a bit of the Buffy&Angel forbidden relationship vibe here, but it's more adult, as opposed to teen. There was also a hilarious and surreal scene involving a giant bounty hunter and some mixed up hand signals. You just gotta see it!

Night Head Genesis 05 - Nice episode that provides some background on the childhood the brothers had. I suppose if people started getting nosebleeds everytime I had a temper tantrum, I'd be pretty screwed up, too. The car is still a mystery... did they buy it? Steal it? They spend the whole episode driving around their old neighborhood thinking about the first time Naoya did this, or Naoto did that... Lots of nosebleeds.

Here's a treat for Battie. Of the three I think I like the Rolling Bubbles one the best, although Powered Buttercup has the most 'tude. Hyper Blossom is best in the group transformation...

Oops, I watched the episode again and the object she was eating was a manju sweet dumpling, probably a gift Hachi brought back from her trip home for Junko. It's still round and smooth!

I wonder if the fansubbers will get this translated right. What Nana said was, "I'm not on the pill any more, so I ain't gonna do it with you in the bath!"

Ahh...watched the first ep of Keronozumo. It was...interesting. I like the set-up so far and the backgrounds are quite good looking. But, my God, the character designs and the animation are postiviely UGLY. Ugliest I've ever seen. I think I'll keep watching it, but it's an affront to my eyes. >:|

Is it just me, or did it have this 80's feel to it?

It IS shockingly ugly and hand-drawn looking. But I've seen a lot of "art" animation like that, and with this level of music scoring and voice acting it's very interesting. I thought Gankutsuou looked really funky too, when I first started watching it, not to mention Windy Tales.

So now I think it's not really ugly. It's part of the loose surrealism of the story, very different from yer run-of-the-mill demon/monster/mecha sort of anime. The way the lines sort of waver and wander all over the place is very jazzy in a way, like the music.

I didn't really have that trouble with Gankutsuou, or even Noein. But Kero...If the faces were just given more attention, I wouldn't mind so much because you're right about the lines. The way they go all over the place makes me dizzy (which is kind of a difficult effect to create in any medium, IMO). But the faces are...Sometimes the eyes are set too far apart or even lopsided. >:|

The music is a nice effect, too. Maybe it's the jazz that makes me think of 80's movies. :P

The sex shocked me, even with your warning. Ha! I was expecting, y'know, something glossed over. Behind closed doors, ya?
