I just finished watching Mishima- A life in four chapters,
blew me away, got down to the point with the man but I felt some pieces to his puzzle were missing in the story.

tell me what you think about it. anyone seen it?

Should read Erin Donovan's review of this one on Guru for some good insight on it. I haven't seen it in years myself but am looking forward to it. I think I was too young to appreciate/understand it first time around...

Erin also reviews the film that Mishima did which also just came out on a Criterion DVD, Patriotism.

I saw it at the NY premier at the Japan Society. Yoko Ono and Sean were sitting in front of us and Sean was still a little kid. Yoko kept trying to cover his eyes through the sexy/violent parts! Very cute.

Afterwards there was a reception and Paul Schrader was really really drunk. Passionate but drunk.

It's a great film and one of my favorite soundtracks ever. Really Philip Glass at his best.

I think the film is a sort of puzzle in itself. Yukio Mishima the man was quite the enigma, so the film is there not to explain his life but to describe it the way Schrader sees it. In a gentler way 32 Short Films about Glenn Gould was a like-minded film... you should give that a try if you haven't already seen it.

There are a lot of Mishima's books currently in print, as well as books about him. You might want to look through these Amazon listings, and reviews, for anything that might look helpful.

Both -- they aren't self-contradictory.

The best place to start might be this Wikipedia article, which also lists an extensive bibliography of Mishima's works, and of books about him, as well as links to further online discussions.
