underdog	post #1  on November 4, 2009 - 11:33 AM PST   Simon Augustine has been listing his picks for the 25 Most Disturbing Movies (we've posted the first 13 so far, more coming soon). Wondering what you would add to the list? How many of these have you seen? What other ones are really disturbing, at least to you? Just added #12! Which is both disturbing and Divine. ;-)

Cinenaut	post #3  on November 16, 2009 - 2:31 PM PST   That was a fun read! I think I've only seen three of the movies on that list (the ones you'd expect: Blue Velvet, Night of the Living Dead and A Clockwork Orange). I'm not sure how many more of those films I really need to actually see.

Salo is unforgettable, but very tough...

Yeah, there are certainly disturbing films that aren't total gross outs (not that all the films on his list are physically gross). There are definitely some psychologically intense films that are hard to watch but aren't really that grotesque in anyway, they just get at you from the inside.

Since disturb means, basically, to throw into disorder, it really should be about those things that knock loose things in our head, whether that means we get nauseated (revulsion), have nightmares (horror), or question our lives and sensibilities (iconoclasm?). If I were to order these, personally, I'd say that in terms of immediate impact, revulsion hits me hardest, then horror, then finally iconoclasm. I shun what revolts me, I fear what scares me, but I generally welcome (and even seek) revelation, even if I hate what I find out. In terms of lasting impact, I'll quickly discard details of the physical experience, and it may take me longer to forget the emotional ones. But sometimes the only way to scourge the residue from an epiphanic experience is to have another. So, looked at this way: revulsion - nausea - physical response horror - nightmare - emotional response iconoclasm - crisis - mental/spiritual response it seems like these are ordered from simple to complex, and I'm going to make a leap and say from easiest to hardest to evoke, as well. Which directors are best at which levels? Which movies are good examples of each level?

weezy	post #11  on April 21, 2010 - 10:33 AM PDT   Human Centipede is being labeled as the most disgusting horror film ever made, but will it be any good? I'm guessing not... just another torture porn flick but with more disgusting mad-science-y repercussions. I also don't know how I feel about another potentially disturbing film (or will it be just absurd?) flick, Trash Humpers. A few weeks ago we added another copy of Base Moi to inventory (it's out of print!) so I'm looking forward to seeing that one.
