I teach a 9th grade World History class in New York State. In the next until, we will be studying South Asia. Part of the study will focus on India's caste system. I am looking for movies (available on GreenCine) that contain scenes that successfully dramatize the caste system.
Any suggestions?

I'm sorry it's been months since you've asked your question, but my favorite Indian film regarding caste is "Ankur," starring Shabana Azmi. It's a serious film from the 70's without songs (of course), it earned a heap of awards, but it's not available on GreenCine. Sorry. Your local library might have it: http://imdb.com/title/tt0071145/. Excellent film, worth a watch even if you weren't interested in Indian cinema or caste.
While it's not explicitly about the caste system, "Awaara," which GreenCine DOES carry, touches on many of the same themes. The 1951 film explores whether the station a man's born into affects who he will become in life, and shows some of the worst and finest living conditions. It was nominated for an award at the Cannes film festival. And it was directed by and stars Raj Kapoor, one of the leading Indian auteurs of his time.
