Don't know how I missed it, but I've been reading plenty of complaints that the recent release of the the new so-called "Ultimate Edition" of Hard Boiled is apparently pretty terrible. Picture quality that, while better than previous US releases, is inferior to the French and German ones, terrible cropping/stretching issues, and, worst of all, dubtitles!

I had high hopes for the Dragon Dynasty label when it was first announced, but man... they seem to have a lot of problems. Plus one for bringing some older Shaw Bros. films to DVD, but minus a million for screwing up a modern classic like this so badly.

I've been needing a copy on my shelf for a long time, but so far there hasn't been an (affordable) Region 1 release that's ever really managed to be worth buying.

An excellent comparison of the video quality from each releases with more knowledge of the releases than I can claim can be found at: http://adg.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=2001

Thanks for the link, that's an awesome breakdown of the available DVDs. I adore Hard Boiled, it was my first foray into the Chow Yun-Fat/John Woo experience, but I don't think I've ever seen it with proper subtitles. Finding quality HK DVDs in the U.S. has been a losing proposition. Even the better DVDs, like Shaolin Soccer, lack the goodies of the harder-to-find original Asian DVDs (thank God for the Peninsula Library System ... )

Here's a live link:
Hard Boiled comparisons.

If you've never seen Hard Boiled though, this issue shouldn't stop you from renting whatever copy is available.

If there's an HD or Blu-ray version, I am all game for firery retribution a' la Chow Yun Fat in high-definition glory.
