Just finished watching Tavernier's Clean Slate (Coups de Torchon) and thoroughly enjoyed seeing it again after all these years. What a marvelous performance by Noiret who has always been one of my favorite actors.

Tonight's DVD is Tavernier's first feature The Clockmaker, which I saw back in 1974.

I wonder if anyone out there has seen another of Noiret's collaborations with Tavernier, The Judge and the Assassin (Le Juge et l'assassin) from 1975.

I might as well put a list of French film favorites together this week.

SPECIAL EVENT: French Director Bertrand Tavernier presents
his new film at Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley

Don't miss this chance to see "Safe Conduct," a new film by renowned French director Bertrand Tavernier, who will appear in person to discuss the film with the audience. The film will show at 2 pm this Saturday, March 1, at the PFA Theater.

This is a superb drama about a filmmaker trying to maintain his integrity---and fight for the Resistance---during Germany's World War II occupation of France. "Safe Conduct" (Laissez-passer) is a tale of adventure and love---including love for the cinema and its heroes.

Tavernier based the story on the real-life experiences of assistant director Jean Devaivre and screenwriter Jean Aurenche. Michael Atkinson, writing in "The Village Voice," calls "Safe Conduct" "one of the very best movies ever made about the life of moviemaking".

Tavernier is one of France's most esteemed directors---his films include "Coup de Torchon," an adaptation of noir author Jim Thompson's "Pop. 1280," set not in the US South, but in French North Africa, and "Round Midnight," which stars the great tenor sax player Dexter Gordon as an American jazz musician in 1950s Paris. Tavernier
is also known as an impassioned champion of cinema: he's a respected critic and author of books about American film, and is the president of the Institut Lumiere in Lyon, France.

Join us Saturday afternoon at 2 pm for a very special event.
