What happened? There were excellent Criterion lasers of Mizoguchi's Sansho the Bailiff and Ugetsu, but now only 47 Ronin is available on DVD from Image. Kon Ichikawa's films are also missing from the catalog, with only his documentary Tokyo Olympiad on Criterion. Burmese Harp would be a more interesting title to see in their catalog again, as well as Fires on the Plain.
Earlier this year the Criterion web site announced that Fellini's La Strada was due for release but it now seems to have been scuttled.
With Roeg's Don't Look Now finally on DVD, what of Roeg & Cammell's mind-bending Performance (a definite antecedent to Sexy Beast) and one of the best cult films of the period.
This is just the tip of the iceberg...
