Oooh, have to say I disagree about [REC] 2. What a way to ruin a good initial premise with all that religious crap. Also, you can't replace a good story and tension with a bunch of manic/yelling characters, none of whom get much development.
The last horror rental I liked was The House of the Devil because it was such an homage to the atmosphere to 70's horror. Wasn't perfect, but still enjoyed it. |

The religious crap was in [Rec] as well, at the end, and that was a nice twist. I thought it was an interesting attempt to mix the infected zombie and demonic possession genres. It certainly gives them an excuse to have the "infection" happen so fast.
Yeah, "House of the Devil" had a nice creepy build-up, but the satan worshiper business seems really old hat to me. I guess that fits the retro nature of the movie.

Me, I want to watch the part of Night of the Demon for the part where Big Foot rips someone's dick off!
Is anyone doing any cool movie-related Halloween costumes this year?
Ryan Gosling said in his Conan O'Brien interview that he's always wanted to be a character people wanted to be for Halloween. Wonder how many Scorpion jackets I'll see this year? ^^

How about The Believer-era Gosling costumes? ;)
I think I'm just going to watch some John Carpenter on Halloween. Some combo involving The Thing/Prince of Darkness/In the Mouth of Madness.
The Thing's a classic hands-down; the latter two have grown on me tremendously over the years (especially Mouth of Madness, being a Lovecraft fan). Prince of Darkness, while admittedly flawed story-wise, is moody as hell & the "dream transmission" scenes give me the creeps to this day.

| I've never seen In the Mouth of Madness, but I do have it queued up. I watched a VHS copy of "The Thing" before I went to see the prequel. I thought the prequel was pretty good. The prequel and the 80s Thing will make a good double feature some day. |

I strongly disagree about the prequel. That's all I'm going to say about that.
The Thing on VHS? You're missing out on a great DVD commentary track w/ Carpenter & Kurt Russell! Russell's hysterical in all his commentaries.
I hope you enjoy In the Mouth of Madness, I think it's terribly underrated. Aside from being a huge Lovecraft fan, another thing I love about the film is how Carpenter's toying with the violence-in-movies censorship debate and saying: "Okay, how about BOOKS causing violent acts & driving people insane?"
Have you seen They Live? I also recommend "Cigarette Burns", Carpenter's first Masters of Horror episode (basically a 1-hour movie, & the DVD is filled with great bonus features). Udo Kier gets disemboweled in a very unique way. |

I got to see "They Live" in a test screening before it was released at a theater in Burbank. Kind of a focus group thing where the studio wanted to get feedback from the general public. The special effects were not finalized, I believe. So, I've got it queued up, too, because that was the last time I saw it.
I've only seen a couple of the "Masters of Horror" episodes. I rented "The Screwfly Solution," because I read lots of James Tiptree Jr. / Alice Sheldon's stuff when I was a kid.
Has anybody seen "Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale" yet? |

Ugh, do not rent The Box, unless "incoherent" and "not scary" are qualities that appeal to you. It started off with promise, and Cameron Diaz was actually pretty good, but , well... oh well... maybe I'm too old to enjoy horror movies any more.

And because it's a Richard Kelly film, it's fatalistic incoherence.
I hardly think The Box represents any strata of quality horror film or science fiction! With all due respect, shiftless, your modesty borders on extremely low self esteem! Have faith in yourself as a moviegoer! A bad movie shouldn't make you question your appreciation of horror, it should make you question of the quality of the film you just saw! :)

Still haven't seen Insidious but I thought I'd mention that, though not strictly horror, I enjoyed the hell out of Triangle. A movie that's better if you don't go in knowing too much about it, which I did.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by "Triangle," and it is good to know nothing about it before you watch it. I've had it on my Puzzle Movie list. That director (Christopher Smith) is one to watch, I think. "Triangle" is his best, as far as I'm concerned.

| That's a nice list, I'll have to queue some of those up. I liked Smith's Severance a lot, thought it was really funny, but also managed to create some real tension too. Black Death wasn't that good, but I'm forgiving of movies with swords and armor, so I enjoyed it. |
