Anyone else excited about this one? Control: The Ian Curtis biopic! Joy Division! wOOt!

Reviews have been really good so far.

Plus Samantha Morton's in it. Anyone seen it already?

I've been curious about this one. It's directed by that music video director right? I remember hearing about how he financed the whole film himself. Don't think I'll head out to see this one, but definitely will queue it up when it gets released to DVD.

Depending where it plays in the city I will try and catch this one in the theater. I read a little bit about it, the reactions of Peter Hook et al. and it seems like it could be really really good. I can watch almost anything about music though. I'm waiting for a Replacements movie...:)

I'm trying really hard to catch this before it leaves theaters.

To be completely honest, I wasn't that excited about it because I usually don't like movies about bands. Even if I love the band. Except for The Commitments. But I'm straying here.

Then I heard The Killers cover Shadowplay for the soundtrack and it was not only NOT HORRIBLE..I actually liked it! So now I'm a little more enthusiastic about seeing the movie. Plus it's black and white is it not? Double bonus!

Did any of you know there is a British Indie Awards? Neither did I! Either way, looks like Control took some big honors including best film, best director, best newcomer, and best supporting actor or actress! I've really been wanting to see this film more and more, even despite my lack of knowledge about Ian Curtis' life.

Well I just watched this on DVD, didn't catch it in time for a theatrical experience. Overall, I liked it but I can watch anything about rock music, especially if it's a band I really like. I didn't think it was a GREAT film, just pretty good. Acting jobs were good all around and it was a good script too.

I think though that the director could use a few pointers about making films as opposed to music videos, a few scenes just seemed to linger on and on.

Also while watching the film, I noticed the quality of the music during the concert scenes was not very good. At first I thought, "oh maybe they are trying to make them look unpolished at first, like a garage band" but it never got better. The bass, especially, was off the beat and it drove me crazy that it didn't sound tight. Then I watched the "making of" extra and found out WHY. The actors, playing the band members, were actually playing their own instruments. I'm all for method acting so that the physical movements looked good on screen, but they were NOT studio level musicians. They should have hired real players to do the actual recording of the live sets. There is a video of the real Joy Division in a 1979 TV appearance. Watch that video and compare to the recreation of it in the movie. The actors can't get it right! I don't know, for a movie about a rock band, the music should be perfect not the hack job they did to it.

Despite that complaint, I liked the movie. Some really beautiful shots in it, and it does a good job of showing all the various pressures on Ian Curtis from all sides before he does the deed.

Debbie Curtis, the dead singer's wife co-produced this film and of course she comes off very well in it so now I have doubts about the integrity of the story to some degree. What do you think?

Also, i want to add that even though I know it was a Ian Curtis" film rather than a "Joy Division" film, I still wished there was a tiny bit more focus on the band as a whole, just cause I'm into that sort of thing.
