Sundance isn't really known for its horror fare (not recently, anyway), but the other day I did see a cool one called The Broken. Also pretty good is the movie version of Jack Ketchum's Red and Brad Anderson's Transsiberian. I'll be back with more horror notes from Sundance (and Slamdance) in a few days. Best to all, hope you dug Cloverfield.

So is "The Broken" different from Broken? (Or the Heather Graham movie Broken for that matter...)

DLeonard	post #9  on February 21, 2008 - 6:06 PM PST   Hey, I caught "Paranormal Activity" last night at SF IndieFest. Myself, and the rest of the packed house, really enjoyed this small but scary film. With what I imagine to be a budget of a few hundred dollars, these people have managed to show us what so many professional filmmakers and film studios cannot. A scary movie (and with almost no blood). And I think the main reason why this movie works where others do not, is a very simple one; we actually care what happens to these characters. Imagine that.

Feh. I'm going to see Zombieland at midnight. :D
underdog	post #13  on October 1, 2009 - 10:15 AM PDT   Trick R Treat is playing at the New Beverly in LA this month, too. I've actually heard good things. I think that and Paranormal (and Zombieland) might also end up looking better just because they are compared to most of the other horror coming out which is generally horrible. Saw 6? really? Sorority Row? Pass. Anything unique and interesting is going to look even better right now.
Battie	post #14  on October 2, 2009 - 3:29 AM PDT   No spoilers (at least, none that are capable of screwing up your movie experience - and I tend to broadly define that): Zombieland was awesome, but I did walk away from it feeling like something was missing. Came across a review online when I got home that said it was like an unexpected one-night-stand: great but leaving you wanting more. Also mentioned it was thought up as a tv show pilot first, which would explain it. That said...sheer awesome. I'd go see it again, even at nighttime ticket prices. Some of the best moments involved BM and Tallahassee. It was also very, very full of pop culture references, but nothing quite so retarded as you'd find in 'Epic Movie' or the rest of that franchise. They were weaved into the story, sometimes so subtle as a billboard behind the action (watch carefully, then laugh) when they get to the west - you'll know what I mean. Most of the references are to older things (the one I mentioned is glaringly new), so hopefully it won't effect the movie as it ages. Also, for the love of FilmGod, do not read any reviews, comments on the film, etc...because people are already posting massive spoilers. And don't look at the cast list if you haven't already. Trust me, it's better if you don't.

I have to echo the warnings about reading too much about the movie. There's a cool surprise in it and the less you know the better. Jesse Eisenberg had better stop making theme park movies or he's going to become typecast.
