Lots of "issue" films that Academy members can feel good about voting for this year.

That's 3 nominations for George Clooney; acting, writing and directing. Had Syriana gotten the nod for Best Picture he could have added a 4th nom as producer.

Nice job!

How come Kong and Gromit didn't get any acting nominations?

I would have preferred Naomi Watts to another Charlize Theron nomination, but what do I know?

But seriously... Jeff Daniels was the biggest snub, imho.

I hate to see films win because they're groundbreaking for issues, and not the actual best ones. Of course, we know that can happen.

I have a list of which nominees I think will win. In years past, I used to also have a list of which nominees I think deserve to win, but as I see fewer and fewer of the movies that even garner nominations, I stopped. :)

Since Corpse Bride and Wallace & Grommit are claymation, would it be safe to say that Howl's Moving Castle is a shoe-in? Just wondering.

I personally don't think it's a shoe-in. Although I loved Howl's, my money's actually on Wallace and Gromit. I'd go so far as to call that one the "favorite." Also, Miyazaki's already won an Oscar, which shouldn't preclude him from winning again since his work is always wonderful, but it does sometimes work against someone in the voting. Plus, it would be fun to see Gromit come on stage to accept the award.

Craig, you are sooo...biased! "All dogs go to Heaven" had its chance.

Woof! I mean, ugh, that movie was for the dogs indeed. Naw, there's a cute (slow-moving) pup in Howl's, too. I'd be happy either way.

Why would cgi/claymation be of lower worth than cgi/drawing animation? Hah, for once no disney!

I don't know if the voting members ever let this sway them, but Miyazaki didn't attend when Spirited Away won. On the other hand, Nick Park also has an Oscar, for the Wrong Trousers short, I think.

D'oh! Absolutely right! Well then... I have no idea. :-) But I do think it will be close between those two. Corpse Bride winning would shock me (though you never know).

Sorry to burst your bubble woozter, but "Howl's moving castle" is being distributed by.....you guessed it! So, in effect, Dis-knee actually has an indirect presence in the category.

Hey, let's get some live reports as we watch the Oscars!

Right now, all I can say is that they've declared war on DVDs... I just turned it on a few minutes ago, and I've already heard two speech snippets telling people to screw the DVDs and go back to see films on the big screen in a theater!

Brokeback won the best score Oscar... contrary to the opinion of the NPR expert Andy Trudeau, who has correctly predicted the winner a couple of times...

Did they say which film won the Best Animated Feature Oscar yet?

I just saw an AMEX commercial with M. Night Shyamalan.... I guess he's officially in the "Seinfeld" phase of his life. Doesn't he have a new film coming out this year? I don't think I've heard any buzz about it at all...

The commercial was pretty BORING, too. I hope he didn't write/direct it himself.

Looks like Wallace & Grommit. I'm only just looking at the update on Yahoo news. Don't care enough to actually watch the Oscars.

Here we go - see who's won so far:

It must be almost over, right? It's 10pm CST. Or does it go to 11pm CST? Oh, I gotta go watch the Boondocks. Guess I'll catch the rest of it tomorrow...

I haven't seen it myself, but to answer your question sensei, yes and yes.

Ditto. I was watching T2 (on a local spanish channel) en espanol last night. That's how much interest I have for the O's.
