author topic: Crash... Deserving or Overrated???

Having seen all entrants into the Best Picture category, I found "Crash" to be a fine film, but not the pinnacle of those films nominated.

Now, before some of you start with the rumor mongering that I must be late for a clan meeting: One, their is no clan in Montana... they're to stupid to organize here (unfortunately, not so stupid as to keep them from breeding. Where is Eugenics when you need it? ;-)Two, I have no designs on marryin' any kin.

So, then, does the question become: Well, he must love "Brokeback Mtn" [insert overplayed and obvious Montana joke here/sans sheep]. No, I found "Brokeback" to be an incredibly well-done/ambitious film, and one hell of a lot better than "The Hulk" [insert obvious Hulk gay joke -just kidding, no such joke exists... the clan hates competition in that dept. ;-)]. And, no, I'm no homophobe... I went to grad. school at Berkeley and lived with two lesbian flat-mates = Not Homophobic.

Truth be told, I found good things about all of the films nominated, I just didn't find "Crash" to be the Colossus that doth bestride all other nominations.

So, Greencine, your thoughts: Deserving or Overrated?

Sidetopic- Is there a film you felt was snubbed for nomination as best picture?

We can also discuss Crash specifically here, though, if y'all want.

By the way, to answer your question - I lean towards overrated but am somewhere in between the two extremes on my opinion of the film. If you're bored, read my look at (critique of) the screenplay for the film on Filmshi.com. Let me know what you think!

True, in which case, overrated and undeserving of BPO.

Yes, Yes, I know all about CYA... The funny thing is I just spoke with them yesterday and neither of them thought that "BBM" or "Crash" should have won for best picture. Go figure??? In fact, Nikki thought that the South Park Episode on Sundance, and the quip/running gag that all of the movies at Sundance involved gay cowboys eating pudding while sitting on fences and exploring their sexuality, kind of colored her enjoyment/viewing of BBM. Again, Funny. No???

I figured BBM to be a shoe-in. With the Golden Globe, the Guild Awards, and the most nominations it seemed statistically feasible to me. I did have Crash as a close second but I just figured there was no way it would win because of it's release too early in the year.

Too early out of the gates kind-of-thing or a case for the evershortening attention span, i.e. what is the latest and greatest buzz or fad?

Not that I would have given either the nod, fine films both, but not worthy of the statuette.

Although it wasn't my favorite of the five films nominated, I found CRASH to be well made and inteligent, if also heavy handed. I really enjoyed the scene where the white tv producer asked a black tv producer if one of the actors on thier show was talking "black" enough; it really captured how touchy a subject race can be, even when you're straining not to be racist. It hit a universal note for the audience, I think. There were a lot of other good moments in the film, too.

So what do you think should have won best Picture Ursus?

Yes, I concur, quite lovely, quite lovely... Now, if only you and I, Shiori, could convince Hamano to transform from his mild-mannered Japanese alter-ego, "Generic-Asian-Icon," back to the highly esteemed and venerated "Totoro." Then, I would not only applaud your excellent taste, Shiori, but would bow to your superior persausive abilities as well.

In answer to your question, Shiori, I re-watched "Capote" with Philly-Sey-Hoffman and I must say that I dug it again the second time. So, right now, I would say "Capote," by a hair or a city-block... I haven't decided by what margin yet ; )

It *is* lovely, indeed. It is also bigger than the 64x64 size we prefer for member icons. Any chance you can shrink it down for us? You can send directly to me, craig@greencine.com and I'll re-upload it for you. If you can't, I'll see if I can shrink it down a little. It'll still look lovely.

Oh, here's poor overworked underdog, busting members' balls again! "Your post's in bad taste!" "Your icon is too big!"

Dwoodwoo, let him go home early to start a peaceful weekend! He needs his rest. He'll start picking on members with weird user names next...

I don't know how to resize it. I figured if it was too big they wouldn't have taken it but they did. Of course if someone will explain how to resize it I would be more than happy too. I don't like breaking the rules.

Easy. First you have to convert your icon back to individual GIF images, resize each one, then merge all into an animated GIF again.

(otherwise, you can just ask me nicely and I'll gladly do it for you)
