What movies are you looking forward to this fall? There are some interesting releases coming up: "A Serious Man," "Zombieland," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "Where The Wild Things Are" and "The Road," to name a few.

The New Yorker printed part of Dave Egger's novelization of "Where the Wild Things Are:" Max At Sea.

Also, the New York Times Magazine has a huge article on Spike Jonze and the movie: Bringing "Where the Wild Things Are" to the Screen

Zombieland (if you haven't seen the unrated trailer yet - it's time for you to youtube it) definitely. It looks like an utter trip. I might try to drag along one of my classmates (who likes zombies and is likely to laugh as loud as I do). Zombieland is probably the movie I'm most looking forward to. I keep rewatching the trailer to giggle at 'giant cock-blocking robot' and other bits. XD

I kinda wanna see Pandorum, despite my freak-out over watching Event Horizon the first time in the dark. Come January, I actually want to see ah..Legion which freaks me out since it uses a similar limb-positioning as The Unborn. I want to see The Road, though I'm hesitant to see it in theaters. The book was something I could only swallow in small doses. It was about as depressing as you can get. There's always Daybreak and Surrogates (and the many October horror flicks) for the non-depressing.

Y'all know me and apocalyptic flicks. :P Everyone's talking about Jennifer's Body, but aside from some chick everyone says is hot, I'm just not that interested. The dark humor and interplay between the female main characters was amusing in the trailer, but I don't see myself going to a film where half the appeal is a chick I don't even find that hot. (Unlike Lucy Lawless's new tv series, heh heh.)

Think I'll catch Whiteout on dvd. The Other Man stars Liam Neeson, who I've been in love with since I was about 12-13. I haven't seen a trailer, but it may be one of those flicks I don't plan on going to see, but end up seeing anyway.

I still haven't seen Pontypool, which makes me sad. :( Seems like zombie films are the only true refuge from shock-horror/torture-porn these days.

I'll be lucky if I have time. Physics is *really* hard and my Spanish teacher uses immersion-style teaching (which means I have to study at least two hours for every class + homework). Heh, I have a bounty hunter as a physics lab partner. :D

What what whaaaat? What is this new Lucy Lawless series you speak of? I am intrigued. If your expectations for it are as high as mine are for Steven Seagal's LAW MAN, boy are we both in for a treat!

Anyone read the comic book? It's always one of those highly recommended ones at the stores, but I never picked it up.

I saw Extract this weekend with an achy tummy, and it was a highly enjoyable escape from laying in bed in the fetal position. A welcome change from the rapid-fire, argumentative style of comedy from Apatow & Co. projects, which seem to be dominating the comedy genre as of late. The repoire between Affleck and Bateman was so easy-going, genuine and funny - and a few moments in the film were laugh-out-loud hilarious. While not the most exciting or inventive film, the awesome supporting cast and likability of the characters make it a worthwhile watch.

She gets naked. Do I care about anything else? No! I mean, uh..Spartacus! You know how you can tell a series is going to be awesome? When they spray-paint lower abs on the main character. Hooyah! Click to the next photo, you'll see what I mean. Horrible red hair for Lawless, though. Such a pity. :(

Speaking of Rome, they're making a movie from the HBO series of a few years ago. Wonder if they can get Purefoy to get naked again...

What, I'm not allowed to have a hobby? XD

The trailer for Where the Wild Things Are made me teary-eyed. I don't know if it'll live up to that, but after reading article with Eggers and Jonze in Script magazine, I feel assured they took exactly the right tack with their adaptation. Can't wait!

WA's Mr. Fox movie also looks like great fun, retro-looking but that just makes it cooler. Definitely looks like a kids movie as if directed by Wes Anderson, which is what it is.

I've had my fills of kabooms and spastic editing, I am mightily looking forward to any and all type of fall/winter flicks.

Besides The Road and Wild Things, I'm spacing in my memory when it comes to thinking of any other films that peek my interest. Here's hoping for some random foreign flick to pop-up this season and blow me away. Last year I was really satisfied with Let the Right One In and Waltz with Bashir coming out of leftfield. Okay actually, I slightly take back what I said about kabooms.. I'm hoping for great things from Sylvetor Stalone's The Expendables. Oh and I'm looking forward to finally getting to gauge Avatar from a theater seat (hopefully IMAX seat) and with 3d goggles glued to my eyeballs.

Also crossing my fingers for a quick-turnaround on the DVD release of Thirst since I missed catching that.

The Coen Bros' A SERIOUS MAN looks like great fun, or at least I'm hopeful. The trailer looks awesome.

And c'mon, who isn't looking forward to the roller derby flick WHIP IT? Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore, Kristen Wiig!

Mira Nair's AMELIA (Earhart) movie with Hilary Swank could be really good. Or could be disappointing. But I'm intrigued.

On the other end of the spectrum... the trailer for Law Abiding Citizen looked so stupid I was speechless afterwards. Maybe it'll be a fun exploitation movie but it just looked unbelievable and dumb.

The Whip It trailer

"Whip It" has such a fun cast, it would be a crime if the movie sucked. It's also got Juliette Lewis and Zoe Bell in it.

I hope "Sherlock Holmes" is good, although I don't know how I'll tolerate Robert Downey Jr.'s English accent.

Mmm...tempting, but I'm afraid of fanboyism run amok. If it were anyone but Ellen Page, I'd expect boobs to be on display everywhere. Gotta wonder how she's gotten away with that so far. (Contrast Whip It to Jennifer's Body...okay, now let me go throw up.)

And yeah, it'd be a massive crime if the movie fell prey to fanboyism or overemotional sentimentality. I'd walk out mad as hell.

I remember watching a few eps from that A&E series covering the rollerderbies, but I just checked out a vid of a bout on the Dallas team's page and...my god, it's the most boring thing ever. What happened to the fists and knockdowns? Ahh...this looks far more interesting. Read down to 'Derby Slang.' Woo, would not wanna get into a barfight with those chicas. Kind of reminds me of my mom.

I think the fact that Drew Barrymore directed it is possibly a good sign re: the fanboy worries, but we'll see. Hard to beat that cast of ladies, though!

As for the Ritchie take on Sherlock Holmes, it could be fun, or it could be like most of his recent movies -- irritating and bad. I like the idea of Downey actually but did we need a movie about Sherlock Holmes as action hero?

You've got a good point about the concept of an action hero Sherlock Holmes, Underdog -- it kind of defeats the entire concept of Holmes. This takes him into Batman territory.

If Drew Barrymore's involvement in the Charlie Angel's movies is any indication, she's not above a bit of fanboyism.

I saw the preview for "Surrogates," which is apparently based on a graphic novel, but I remember a science fiction short story with a very similar plot. I don't know who wrote it, but it's about a future where you can buy any robotic body you want and everybody spends all their time at home in vats, until something happens that causes the protagonist to have to break out of his vat and go into the real world. Now I want to know who wrote that story!

I think I take back almost everything I said/implied about Jennifer's Body. It's written by Cody Diablo (who wrote Juno & The United States of Tara) and directed by Karyn Kusama (who directed one of my favorite chick flicks, Girlfight).

I do believe I'll be seeing this opening night. Yessiree.

...Of course, if it disappoints, I'm burning the theater to the ground with everyone in it, Carrie-style.

Or burn down a Derby rink! Kinda like how I'm gonna burn down a sorority house if Sorority Row sucks!

Just kidding. Because I think we all can assume that Sorority Row WILL suck. But I'll definitely rent the original based on blogger Final Girl's recommendation (thanks Underdog for sending me the link!).

I went to see "Extract," and it was pretty funny. It's very low-key as Mike Judge projects tend to be, but there are lots of good chuckles and at least one scene that had the audience (and me) LOL.

It was nice to see Kristen Wiig dial it back and play a relatively normal person for a change.

I gave in a went to see Paranormal Activity Friday. I was almost sure it'd be a 'meh' film.

Three days later, and I'm still afraid to go to bed. I spend 30 minutes absolutely paranoid and more than a little scared. Friday night was bad...I swear I heard footsteps in my kitchen and there was a crash coming from (I THINK) next door. My cat was next to me the entire time. Last night, I convinced myself it wasn't there by applying fractured logic. If acknowledging the thing in the movie is what made it worse, then by ignoring my paranoia would make it go away! Heh.

That said, the movie itself is just unendingly creepy. It doesn't obey Horror Film Universe Laws. There are no 'expected' scares. You just spend the entire movies going, "Oh god, what's going to happen now!?" But when you walk out of the theater, you may not feel creeped out anymore. You might even feel confused, unsure if it was good or disappointing. I think it's because of the expectation of what I movie should be: slick production values, perfect camera work, CGI, etcetera. And the expectation of what a horror film should be. Some of the best tension-ramping moments came when you were anticipating what was going to happen next...but PA doesn't obey the Horror Film Universe Laws, remember?

Paranormal Activity just...absolutely screws with its audience (in a way all horror movies should). I do not exaggerate when I say the ending (which may have been the one part that didn't fit the style) had me slunk way down in my chair, pressed as far into it as I could go, eyes wide and breathless. It was basically a slow amping up of tension until just about any 'good' scare could've broken it. Just good film-making, with a charming 'couple' on-screen.

I honestly have never had a movie keep me tense for the ENTIRE time, nevermind mess with me so bad that I'm freaked out going to bed days later. I found this quote on Rotten Tomatoes:

'This isn't a horror film, it's a a lesson in how to build fear.'

All said though...you might wanna wait till it's on DVD. Pick a night when you're home alone, no neighbors making noise outside, turn out all the lights...then be freaked out of your mind.

I wonder if "Paranormal Activity" would be less scary at home with a pause button?

"Where The Wild Things Are" starts Friday! Will it be a crazy mess, or crazy good?

Wow Battie, legitimately that good and scary huh? Perhaps I'll try and take the gf to watch the flick. Though I'll deservedly get some slaps while I try and scare her myself midway during the movie. That's one of those poor habits I've kept since childhood when it comes to horror flicks.

And I definitely want to see WtWTA but might wait a week for the crowds to die down. Intuition tells me the majority of the type of people to come flocking to the film on opening weekend will have a higher than average chance of annoying behavior during the viewing.
