Kudos to GreenCine developers for getting a recommendation system up and running! I'm kind of wondering how it is picking DVD titles though, is it looking at what titles you rate highly, then looking at what other customers rated that those titles highly and recommending other titles they rated highly? Does it consider availablity patterns in it commendations?

Yeah, that's kinda neato. I wonder how often the recomendations will change?

Hmm... GC only recommended two hantai animes to me. Must be because I didn't try hard enough to make myself an infamous reputation here.

GC also recommended lots of DVDs which I already own. Does it make sense to give a title a high rating and "not interested" at the same time?

Yep, I think it needs a "been there, done that" button, so it doesn't change your recommendations, but makes the ones you've already seen go away.

We'll include a more in-depth look at the new recommendations engine in tomorrow's Dispatch newsletter, but just to get everyone squared away:

Definitely click on the "Improve" link the first few times.

The Recommendations are as good as you make them -- so a certain amount of clicking around and rating will help build you a better set of recommendations. You should first click on your rental history link to rate as many of those films as you can -- these films shouldn't appear in your list of recommendations but rating them will give us a better sense of what you like and don't like, and further strengthen the recs.

Then you should also go through the list of recs that you're first given, either selecting "not interested" if you're not, or giving that film a rating. Doing the latter will remove the title from your list of recs, because it tells the engine that you've already seen that film (and doing the former will of course do likewise). Hit refresh each time you make a set of changes or updates to the recommendations engine, and you'll see a new set of picks for you.

So you're strongly encouraged to rate films you've seen, to give the engine more data on your likes and dislikes, as well as to eliminate having a film appear in your recommendation list that you've already seen.

Make sense? We think it's pretty darned cool. But again, it works best if you help it out.

Thanks!

And as I said above (but in case it's not clear), rating a title (or clicking "not interested") will make the ones you've seen (and rated) go away. Does the same as you suggest.

So does "Not Interested" mean "I've already seen it" or "I'm not interested in this crap"? I'm just worried in case GC decides to recommend lots of gay porns to me.

That is very useful! What a delightful feature.

Also, in the way of answering my own previous question, it changes everytime you refresh the home page!

I believe he is saying:

1) Rating it means "I've already seen it" and it will no longer appear on your recommendations list once it is rated by you.

2) not interested means "stop showing me this crap"

That makes sense, so it does have a been there done that feature. Let's see how many I can make go away! Just kidding. This is a nice feature, and will keep me away from my queue.

This brings up the question of how to rate the DVDs though. I've always rated them as "How much did FDGUARINO enjoy this DVD", but some people may be rating them with "How good(quality) is this movie", even if they did not enjoy the movie. If everyone is rating them on a different scale, won't it throw off the recommendations? Not to mention that some otaku out there seem to be giving rather high ratings to some pretty lame anime(like this).

I think it's starting to get me, a little. It took some work, though.

I rate the movies on how much I like them. There are a few I give 10s to that I think no one else would, but just thinking about "Repo Man" makes me happy.

Lizzo, you need to make a list of your "happy" movies.

This is pretty neat. Although mine does seem to be lots of anime...

But there should be a 3rd option to add the disc to your queue and then remove it from the recommendations. After going through a few pages of recommendations, I have a couple of discs at the top that are already on my queue. I can't rate them, but I can't say that I'm not interested either. Personally, I rate everything after I watch it.

D'oh, nevermind, it does that! I could've sworn I had that DVD on my queue already... Too much anime. And how come I can't rate Tenchi in Tokyo a zero?

Cool! And rating stuff to improve the recommendations is proving adictive.

That's a great idea. I think I'll start working on that list.
