I just noticed that Ashram has an animated icon. This is NOT a good thing, as it hurts my eyes and causes me to throw the monitor across the room. Animated banners have the same effect. Please do not encourage this in the future, the cost of monitors is not going down very fast.

can't you tell by the icon that screaming is the first response.

Wow, sorry JHeneghan. I promise I won't do it again. It's a good thing ashram writes very few posts, but I'm almost EVERYWHERE. I swear I'm not trying to give anyone a headache. I tried to attach a midi-file of the Totoro theme song to my icon, but I guess it was a good thing that attempt failed.

I think since that incident where an episode of Pokemon caused 5 or 6 children all over Japan to simultaneously go into seizures, they advise that you should make sure that the room is well lit, and you sit as far away as possible from the screen!

aww... i like hamano's big cute eyes staring at me... it's almost like he's looking at me! however, ashram's icon is a wee bit on the defensive side, eh? it's a good thing i know him :)

well, it's a good thing that the icon only shows up half the time. seriously tho, you could also hit "stop" on your browser after the page has loaded to stop the animation.

or you could turn off the animations in your browser.

or for a more extreme measure, turn off the images in your browser

OOH, maybe I'll change to a Gorgon icon with writhing snakes that can turn GreenCine board posters into stone!

Hmm, if I turn off the images, I can't see things like the "reply" button either. I'm using Safari on mac os x and it doesn't seem to have a preferences option for turning off animated GIFs.

JHeneghan, you rent mostly anime... Do some anime sequences hurt your eyes, too? Just curious...

If you set your monitor at a really high resolution, maxime your browser, and go to a post where hamano is really active, you get to see bunches of little totoro eyes looking around at the same time... very spooky in the dark.

Some browsers allow you to specify animated GIFs can only "animate once" (then it is static).

I do not have steps for this, but I saw it once in the config file somewhere for Mozilla. Opera is also good about features.

I'm not sure how or if you can do it in Microsoft Explorer (does anyone use *that* thing anymore? It doesn't even block popups or allow tabbed browsing... lol)

There are worse things than animated GIFs... like BLINK! LOL :-D

I didn't even notice that hamano was animated. And Ashram's current icon is subdued enough. That last one that was just flashing drove me crazy. And since I am forced to use IE during the day, I am stuck with it. IE seems to ignore my requests to not animate images as a default. That's not what Bill would do.

No, it only appears to bother me when there is a lot of distracting motion on a page where I am trying to read text. I know that a lot of the recent anime opening sequences like to do a lot of images like stop animation, except the images don't follow a normal sequence, and they don't hurt a bit.

I think it might be that my eyes are directed to the text, then there is noticable motion elsewhere on the page and my eyes jump to that, then I go back to the text. Repeat 2-3 time a second for many seconds and your eyes start to hurt.

Some people in my family haven't noticed I'm animated.

I think Ashram's icon cycles between the Karate Kid and the Gassy Green Zeiram. I wonder how that works!?!

karate kid is akira from virtua fighter 4. gassy green zeiram is actually ashram the black knight from this anime is actually not being used right now. how that works is a perk for being a resident llama and part-time monkey.
