Did you like Escaflowne? That's another "mecha" show that isn't very mecha. I'd recommend both of these (RahXephon and Escaflowne) if you haven't seen them. You could almost rent them just for the music! The music for Escaflowne was composed by Yoko Kanno, who did the score for Cowboy Bebop.

Well the music of Bebop is on our anime music collection CD so maybe I'll give Escaflowne a try, the series not the movie.

> Your list didn't have a lot of shoujo stuff...(Ceres, but it's not near the top) Fruits Basket is one of my all time favorites BUT it's heavy on romance and drama (although it IS also very funny). That was also why I'm hesitating to recommend Revolutionary Girl Utena, which is on my top 10 list but based on your list I'm not sure you'd like it...

Oh, the list wasn't completely oriented on how much I liked them. Of course the ones you like the best are the ones that come to mind first. I loved Berserk and I love Saikano..."gomen-ne", its sooooo sweet. We both like action, romance and a good cry. My husband still tears up on ep 24 of Bebop, even after 4 times! That sunset and the music, Ed walking away, Faye lying there... heck, I'm getting a lump in my throat right now. We're not too big into angles or winged cherebs but if its interesting and goes somewhere we'll give it a try.

So are you saying X-the series is shoujo? The previews all make it seem action packed.

It IS action-packed but it's from CLAMP, and it's major GOTH SHOUJO psychic-magic-mystical action. Some people are VERY moved by it, and there are fanatic addicts who love the show. It's like Magic Knights Rayearth for older teens and adults. My favorite CLAMP show is Cardcaptor Sakura.

Fruits Basket has a leeetle bit of action, but it has romance and lump-in-throat cries in truckloads.

Escaflowne puts a leeetle bit of a lump in your throat, but it's full to the brim with action and romance.

I'm watching Escaflowne right now (well, not RIGHT now, but five minutes ago). I've seen the movie, and it sucked. I've seen half series in the past, and I'm finally getting around to watching the whole thing. The music DOES rock, and the series IS much better than the movie.

Minor spoiler:

I just watched Van kicking everybody's ass after he learned to meld with Escaflowne, and the music there is AWESOME. It's symphonic with chorale parts over the top of it. I'll probably end up buying the soundtrack now, as I also already have the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks and think Yoko Kanno is brilliant.

On a related note, I think it would be a lot of fun to see Seatbelts perform live. As jazz goes, they are really quite good.

-Looks around- Who me? -points to self- But I've always lived in this eye-wrenching blue and orange Hell. I've actually never been to SLC, but I did see the movie SLC Punk and it was kinda funny. I dated a guy in highschool who later became a Mormon. Does that count?

Like hamano said, RahXephon is less about the mecha (like Escaflowne) more about the characters. There are mechas, but they aren't even in every episode and are very secondary to the plot. And yes, it DOES have the hottest anime man ever, the luxurious Ayato Kamina. (Heehee, I got to post that twice in one thread!)

I wasn't even aware that they did that. I live way up here in Gainesville and Orlando is about 2+ hours away. UF has an anime club that I go to sometimes.

Shoujo doesn't necessarily mean romance, though that is usually part of it. Shoujo stories tend to concetrate on the emotional aspects of the characters, which "X" does in droves.

I just saw a bunch of animes, but only 2 shows managed to hook me: Gantz and Initial D.

I think I'm the only one who prefers the dubbed version of Initial D. It's mainly because of the music. It's not that there's great music on the dubbed version (far from), but I like it a lot better than the music on the original version which is chock full of stuff that sounds like Euro-pop.

The production value on Initial D isn't that great, but it's a very addictive story. I saw the first two volumes and I might continue my GC membership just to see the rest. The only problem is that every anime title I really want is always stuck on yellow (e.g. RaXephon 2), so I'll probably still quit...

Gantz is really good. I think I'm gonna buy an import.

BTW, Donna, do you still want me to send you that manga? or have you given up? I was just trying to send too much in one attachment. Blah.

Oh, I've been watching Full Metal Panic- Fuffumo (sp?). It's really funny and sweet. I don't usually like the anime's where the girl is always beating the guy up for screwing up- it's SO mean. But I think Sousoke's character just cracks me up so much that it makes up for it. You should maybe check it out if you haven't already. The other FMP is sweet also, but with more mecha fighting and doesn't have a satisfying ending on the romance end (no conclusion at all, which sucks). I only got halfway through FMP-F last night.

:) Maybe the volumes on disk 4 were an anomaly. I just watched disk 5 and it's starting to pick back up again...

I wish I was watching Nausicaa. The page says it releases in 2005 sometime, but the queue reports it as October 1st.

Frickin' Disney is screwing with the release dates. Originally it was supposed to be August. Then it was pushed back until October. Then it became the wholly ambiguous "sometime in 2005."

I wonder if they're delaying the DVD release to ride an expected wave of popularity for Howl's Moving Castle. I don't believe a US release date has been announced for Howl, but it's supposed to be out in Japan in November and in France in January. If the US gets an early '05 release and the film does as well as Spirited Away did, they might then suddenly pop up and say, "Did you like that? Well there's more where that came from!" Then the Nausicaa DVDs sell like hotcakes.

I wish they'd just do a full theatrical release for Nausicaa. It would draw in audiences.
