I like this pic better

Regardless shes still hot even tho there were some bad pics of her she still looks good, especially with her hair dyed. Anyhow shes older than I thought, yay im not a perv well at least this time ^_^

Its hard to believe shes like 30 tho, she could pass for like 22 easily and Id even believe shes younger if someone told me so.

Ah, you American kids are so easy to mislead... We're all older than we look, you know.

In the video for the ParaKiss OP song, I think she's kinda making fun of teen fangirls... it's a post-Mod thing we geezers like to do. The girls from Puffy AmiYumi are in their 30's too.

I was just surprised that your idea of HOT is a skinny girl with glasses and dyed hair... Allyson Hannigan does the nerd-chic thing really well, and she's funny as hell. She was hot as Evil Willow once on Buffy but she also played Good Willow pretending to be Evil Willow which was funny on so many levels... what I'm trying to say is that part of the sexiness comes from camp role-playing, which is what Kawase is doing in the ParaKiss video.

There's a "sexy girl with glasses" trope that's popular in anime... I think it's a cosplay thing but it was already there in Yawara, with the annoyingKuniko. There seem to be two types... the annoying/ditsy comic relief type and the quiet/smart type. What they have in common are they wear glasses and have big boobs.

annoying/ditsy
Kuniko from Yawara
Taeko in Ai yori Aoshi

quiet/maternal
Yayoi from Stellvia

Now there's a spunky moe/loli girl with glasses trope that's going around, too. Tsubomi from Ultimate Girls, Casha from Solty Rei, Chie from Petopeto-san...

Oh, hey, there's a Anime Girls with Glasses website!

I guess this Shannon Elizabeth character on the right is the more typical American Girl with Glasses fantasy...

I typically like girls with glasses better IRL hamano could give a crap what some anime character wears :P

Heck in the Ichigo 100% manga I liked Tsukasa far more than Toujo and toujo had glasses and was a nerd with big boobs :P

Point being dont try to stereotype my taste, it doesn't work like that :P

But ya I stand by my statement that she looked really freaking good in that vid. (no this does not mean I have a skinny girl with glasses) you could be more accurate if you said I had a cardigan sweater miniskirt and highsocks fetish >_>

I mentioned earlier that I really like this live action show called Densha Otoko, which features an anime open with a little bunny girl riding on top of trains that fire carrot missiles, all to the tune of "Twilight" by ELO. I really liked that opening sequence.

What I didn't know is that it's an homage to an old short film made by some of the people who started Gainax for the Daicon science fiction festival. C1 Anime has a very rough VHS rip of the Daicon III and IV films on their tracker. This film is so much fun it's worth the download despite the poor quality, whether you've seen Densha Otoko or not. It has a similar flying bunny girl, but without the carrots sticking out of her ass.

I am really enjoying Mushi Shi. The show does a really good job of establishing and maintaining a certain mood, and it's really quite an intelligent treatment of the mythology around rods.

I am also enjoying Blood+, although I'm a little afraid it's going to lose its pace and peter out before the end. I worry that they've already shown us Saya at her baddest.

I also have to revisit something Hamano said about Cluster Edge. He mentioned that the setup of the boys' school seemed a little "faggy." The school, however, hasn't played as much a part in the show as I expected. The focus seems to be on Agate, his background and his exploits outside the school more than on the school itself. It also has all but left the aircraft theme behind at this point, without much flying at all since Agate's plane was destroyed. The character naming convention is stupid (they're all named after gems or minerals), but there may be something interesting here anyway. Jury's still out.

Meanwhile, in Eyeshield 21 the Devil Bats are now playing football with the "NASA Aliens" and are quite funny; Ichigo finally pulled out his bankai in Bleach; Akitsuki in Suzuka is a freakin' idiot; and I'm still patiently awaiting new fansub releases of Zipang, Zettai Shounen, Yawara, Pretty Cure, PetoPetosan, Haruka Naru Toki no naka de and Eureka 7.

Well, that was before the credits in Episode 1. I'm sure we're meant to believe that Saya will get pretty close to that again before the end of the series. The question is will she be able to hang on to the tenuous "humanity" she's found with her foster family?

> The character naming convention is stupid (they're all named after gems or minerals), but there may be something interesting here anyway. Jury's still out.

I thought the gems thing was a nod to Sailor Moon... You're still watching that? Are there any female characters in it yet?

> Ichigo finally pulled out his bankai in Bleach;

That was pretty cool. I wonder what's going down with the macho old guy with the long beard and eyebrows. I found a torrent for the RAW manga and it was interesting how closely the anime follows the manga. The only difference is that the anime tends to switch between short scenes involving the various clusters of characters that are spread out all over the place. The manga tends to stay with one setting and one cluster of characters at a time.

> Akitsuki in Suzuka is a freakin' idiot;

He will be up to the end of Ep. 25, I think.

Have you stopped watching ARIA? It's a real test of an anime watcher's patience... One episode showed Director ARIA's butthole a LOT, just daring viewers to stop watching.

Black Cat is getting pretty interesting... I'm up to Ep. 6 in RAWS. They just killed off a major character that appears in both the OP and ED sequences. I'm also still watching Solty Rei.

KARIN is actually quite amusing, I think.

WARNING! PARAKISS SPOILER! LONELY IN GORGEOUS!!

Oh, and there's also a lot of actual HUMPING in Parakiss around Ep. 6... George is a bit worried that he's so BIG he'd hurt her, but Caroline still serves him a cherry sundae. George actually manages to drive his limo into the right carwash, and he gives Caroline a banana split. Miwako and Hiro-kun almost end up sharing dessert with them, but sorry there's no threesome or foursome. Arashi just ends up going home alone. Sorry for the mixed metaphors....
If the show is evolving into a more standard romance/soap melodrama, I have to say someone is gonna end up pregnant pretty soon!

No, there are no female characters, but somehow the show still doesn't come across as being gay. What you probably haven't seen is where Agate gets pissed off and jumps up into a plane that's attacking him and shoots it down with its own machine gun. The resulting explosion seems to have knocked out his memory, so he decides to race boats instead of going back to school.

Re: Bleach:
> I found a torrent for the RAW manga and it was interesting how closely the anime follows the manga.

I haven't read the manga, but I've read a little about where it goes from where the anime is now. If they stay true to the manga storyline, it's going to be really cool. I'm hoping that sometime really soon we'll get to see that wicked Hollow version of Ichigo that pops up in the opening credits.

On the other hand, the last sub of it had a note that Bleach is going into a 22 episode filler arc to let the manga get a little further ahead. Sometimes the filler arcs can be okay, but sometimes they're really stupid. I hope they don't screw it up.

> Have you stopped watching ARIA? It's a real test of an anime watcher's patience... One episode showed Director ARIA's butthole a LOT, just daring viewers to stop watching.

I am still really enjoying it. Although it's so much different in so many ways, I still get the same happy feeling from it that I got from Haibane Renmei.

I noticed the strange preoccupation with Aria's butthole, and I couldn't help but think about that Disney commercial from last year where the dog dreams about going to Disney World. When the dogs run toward the Magic Kingdom, if you look closely you'll notice that none of them have buttholes. The ad agency had them digitally painted out. I didn't notice it at first, but once it was pointed out to me it looked really, really strange.

Oh, yeah, according to the manga, maybe in a couple of episodes...

> On the other hand, the last sub of it had a note that Bleach is going into a 22 episode filler arc to let the manga get a little further ahead.

Oh, great... that probably means we'll get to spend time with Ichigo's sisters and the gang back home, and Don Kanoji! Please... noooo... my kids like those episodes, though.

> I am still really enjoying it. Although it's so much different in so many ways, I still get the same happy feeling from it that I got from Haibane Renmei.

If you like ARIA you should give Kokoro Library a try, if you haven't already. And Maria-sama ga Miteru.

The Japanese DO tend to include anatomical details that are deliberately left out of American cartoons... buttholes, scrotums, what have you. But Aria-shacho's display was a bit excessive even by those standards, I thought.

As God is my witness I have told no lies!! There WAS a double penetration in one episode of Loveless, when Soubi convinced Ritsuka to punch a couple of new holes in his earlobes for earrings. If you look at that episode and read what I said, you'll see that every single thing I said actually happened. This is also the case for what I wrote above.

I recently watched Kappa no Kaikata, which is about a young man learning to care for a pet kappa. After the preoccupation with kappa anus and kappa dung in that show, not much else surprises me. At one point the guy is instructed to blow into the kappa's ass to inflate the air reservoir in its shell so it can swim.

After that, along with the tanuki attacking people with their testicles in Pom Poko, Aria seems a little tame.

AHAHAHA!

I wish I had put some money on this happening with Hamano-sensei--oh yee of little faith!

Yes yes episode six happened. And it was good. FOr the creaters said, let there be action and take sight and watch all of it.

And I did. And. I am pleased. *nod nod*

Oh, looks like good ol' TokyoTosho is back on line, with a new look... I've found some gems at the other site I linked to above, though. Links to torrents for all the available episodes of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou or Yokohama Shopping Trip. If you haven't seen it yet, but you're enjoying ARIA, definitely worth a look. It's about a robot girl who runs a cafe in some sort of postapocalyptic Japan or something... No it isn't about anything really. Well, you'll have to see for yourself. Here's the ANN entry for the first OAV series.

Just when I thought things were getting boring around here, Ep. 10 and 11 of Mushi-shi cleared the doldrums. Two very excellent episodes that were just as good or better than the "Blindness" episode (Ep. 2) at the beginning. One about a mushi-haunted Suzuri (Ink Grinding Stone) and the other about the Nushi (Guardian Spirit) of a mountain (lots of echoes of Princess Mononoke... and Ginko almost loses it!) Oh, that last one also has a really BIG rod for Shaky!

Well, I finally caught up with Monster, Bleach, Paradise Kiss, and Tsubasa Chronicle. I also watched Gankutsuou and Chrono Crusade. So...

Monster is a lot more twisty than I first thought. Very awesome plot.

Bleach isn't *really* my kind of anime most of the time, but it has enough humor to keep me interested between the multitude of battles. :P And some bishie. Musn't forget that, teehee.

Tsubasa Chronicle was umm...Well. If it hadn't been for that silly blonde guy (Uhh...name started with an F??), I would've lost interest. But he cracked me up. It was such a fangirl lure, to make him seem so very...Gay. ^_^ >:P

Paradise Kiss made me cry at the end. *sob* I still feel melancholy when I think about the ending, but I loved the series. And, to be truthful, that ending made a lot more sense than a romantic one. *cries anyway*

Chrono Crusade would've been more enjoyable if it had left out the cutesy stuff. >:| But the ending was sweet and sad, and overall it wasn't a bad series. Just one I'm not going to rewatch.

The same, however, cannot be said of Gankutsuou. Omg, that series rocked. Besides the beautiful visuals, the plot (yeah, it was picked up off The Count of Monte Christo..so?) was amazing. I never actually thought an anime could pull it off. Gankutsuou is now stuck in my "favorite anime" position. Parakiss is #2, Kyo Kara Maoh is #3, and Bastard is #4. >:P Berserk and some others are floating around, too, haha.

I also happened to see a CGI movie (Korean?) called Ark. It wasn't bad. Nice plot, okay graphics. Nothing I'm whacky over, but a good CGI film (in FF style). I'm debating whether or not to rent The Prophecy (for like the third or fourth time) or Kaena: The Prophecy. Kaena is supposed to have stunning graphics...So, maybe. But I watched The Prophecy: Forsaken recently and it's called up a desire to see the originals. Man, I love free BB coopons.

I *also* just finished the first episode of Ergo Proxy. Now, I gotta say, out of all the animes supposed to come out this year, *this* one just hit the top of my "woohoo" list. I love sci-fi animes that are all gloomy. Rotfl. I'm anticipating it more than an shounen-ai (heh heh heh) and the Hellsing OVA. And maybe one or two others that I can't remember.

Just so ya know, I spent like 2-3 weeks doing nothing but watching anime. I unplugged my net and rarely watched tv. Even my reading suffered. Rotfl. Only way I could make a dent in some of the anime I had. Now if I could just force myself to sit down and watch Ceres...

So, anyone else seen Ergo Proxy yet?

post #178  on February 13, 2006 - 3:29 PM PST
I saw it. I was pretty lukewarm to it after watching it twice. The gay robot partner (does that come across in the fansubs?) is a hoary old stereotype and neither the situation nor the characters managed to hook me in. I'll give it a couple more episodes before I decide to keep watching it.

I watched the first installment of the Hellsing OVA and I actually loved it! I was not too happy with the TV series, but this version (it's actually like a really fancy recap episode, with bits of the story from a few TV series eps crammed together) had a lot of funky forward momentum and it was FUNNY! Seras Victoria has a clearer, better defined character arc, which I also thought was a big improvement. She does a lot of comic relief but I think that's a GOOD thing, eh? Basically it's like all the good things about the TV show mixed with some of the good qualities of the recent Cutie Honey OVA.

Other new shows that I'm watching:

MAJOR - the NHK baseball series carries on with Goro now in middle school coming back to play with some of his chums from little league. Good family sports fun.

HANBUN NO TSUKI GA NOBORU SORA - Sky with the Half Moon - I'm sensing a major romance/tear-jerker of the old "Love Story" variety... a high school boy who is in and out of a hospital a lot because of his chronic hepatitis falls into a relationship with a mysterious beautiful girl who "lives" in the special cases wing. She's got one of those movie-friendly heart ailments that probably needs an operation for her to survive. So it's like one of the oldest soapy romance plot devices, but I think this is done well. Pretty drawings, nice voice acting, pretty good script. It's not shoujo... it's shounen romance, mostly from the POV of the boy. And it's not for adults really, not like ParaKiss or Honey & Clover... probably aimed at a teen audience.

BINCHOUTAN - CUTENESS WARNING!!! EXTREME CUTENESS WARNING!!! Heartwarming but sugary story about a little girl (little spirit of the hearth maybe?) with a piece of charcoal tied to her big head. She lives in the forest alone but she's friends with all the flowers and animals. In the first episode she takes a ride across a lake on a DUCK! The narrator is the voice actress who did Belldandy on OMG...

Oops, I forgot one.

REC - So far so good. A grown up romance story, about a guy who works as a drone at an advertising agency and a young voice-over actress who is just starting out. Through a chance meeting they end up seeing a movie together (she's into Audrey Hepburn and wants to dub all her movies) then through an improbable set of circumstances she ends up living in his apartment, and starring in the first ad project he ever got approved by his bosses. The first episode is pretty much taken up with setting up this situation, so we'll have to see how things progress from here, but appealing characters and some nice quiet grown up humor makes me want to keep watching.

OK, binchoutan is a type of high-grade charcoal with many uses!

Binchoutan

Binchoutan products.

Apparently it's all in the negative ions. You can use a piece of the charcoal to purify water. You can also cook with it.
