While we're waiting for Cinenaut to chime in with the correct answer, I have another guess.

If they meant the film was a BLACK COMEDY like Heathers, maybe the film was A Dog's Breakfast.

No, not that recent. This would have to be a few years old at least and highly thought of at least in a cult sense.

Do you remember ANYTHING about the plot or WHY it was being compared to Heathers?

Nope. Just black comedy, probably clique groups, and almost certainly high school. I guess earlier post or pre high school would be possible.

This is driving me mad! So was it from the 80s, 90s, or more recent?

Must have been about three years ago I caught the ref, so earlier than that with anything farther back possible. Could easily be later than Heathers, but not more recent than I saw the ref. The memory's swathed in green, so it could have been something I read right here, but more likely I came here looking after a ref at IMDB or in a news or magazine mention. If I'd seen it, I would have queued it. I use my queues like notepads for things to decide later whether to delete or keep. What I think happened this time was I didn't see it, so made just a mental note to look again then remembered intending to remember but not the title.

Of course, it could still be queued (my own fault for lazy maintenance not GC's), but nothing looks likely either here or in the red orange yellow stuff I grafted out to NF.

My memory can operate a little oddly. Hal Harley's Truth and Heathers, though I recall each perfectly well, fit into one fuzzy sub-genre, but the ref I'm talking about in this thread definitely mentioned Heathers and a Canadian, I think earlier, similar effort, and made a positive estimation of both.

Canadian is absolute. I'm not fuzzy about that.

Okay, I'm going to take a wild stab at this... Is it perchance: The Mallory Effect?

It's actually a Canadian film and seems to fit with some of your description, though I'm not sure it's a teen movie...

We'd get it for rent if that's the one you seek.

Oops, sorry, screwed that link up. The Mallory Effect.

Probably not. Looks lame, and googling the two together is unproductive.
