With English subtitles, it says! Hmmm....pretty nice. I wonder if this is more or less a straight up chanbara film with a little "Beat" twist to it, or if this is Kitano's "Kill Bill"??

$38 will answer your question. From what I've seen it's as much a 'straight up chanbara' as Kitano's early movies are straight up gangster or police films, in other words, non very. Sure, it's got fightin', but it's also got tap dancin'!

Besides Battle Royale 2 (not yet released by Tartan Video, but none the less available on Region 3 2-Disc DVD or VCD @ www.hkflix.com), the website's up now for the sequel to the Pang Brother's The Eye @ www.eye2themovie.com, the film remake of Ju-On is now available on DVD (Juon: The Grudge) again at www.hkflix.com, and I recently saw a vcd with english subtitles for Juon: The Grudge 2 up for bid at ebay. You might see an American DVD release of this to coincide with the DVD release of the American remake once its left theaters (a barebones DVD, just like the American Ringu DVD release I suspect) and the same probably goes for the American remake of Dark Water, once that goes to DVD in a year and a half. Then again there's also that American movie. Then there's the British DVD release of Cypher ( a 1-disc DVD as opposed to the earlier released German 2-disc DVD set), while the film isn't entirely Asian, it has had better success and circulation in Japan then anywhere else it seems, and it stars Lucy Liu, so close enough I guess. Just save yourself the time and buy a code-free DVD player. It doesn't have to cost much, we can't depend on American DVD distributors to release most of the good foreign films anyway (they'd sooner remake these films then re-release them--it's a miracle that the works of Takashi Miike ever found its way into the states on DVD!).

There's another thread about this movie here. I'm so excited about it I'm willing to rent the original anime from the 70s, if GC ever locates it :)

Here's an early review of Kar-Wai Wong's highly anticipated 2046 by Allan Hunter at Screen Daily!

2046 is the Palme apparent? We'll know soon enough...

I admit I'm a little dissappointed that 2046 is merely a continuation of the excellent In the Mood for Love - I had heard it described as a Science Fiction movie, which would be bizzarre, but maybe in a good way?

Has anybody seen In the Mood For Love 2001, mentioned in the one review??? Do they mean the extended scenes that came with the Criterion DVD, that take place after the movie? I had thought those were scenes cut from the original movie - a tough cut, but the right decision.

And I'm very surprised that Ghost in the Shell 2 was shown at Cannes. That looks baaaaad.

A person who I tend to agree with told me, plus that it's a sequel in the first place, and more especially that it's a sequel to Ghost in the Shell, which I personally thought was extremely cliched & forgettable, more a run-of-the-mill genre piece than anything. Althought I get the idea that people either love or hate that director.

Ah well, we have very different tastes then.

From what ive seen in the trailers the movie is animated wonderfully, not sure what the story will be like though. The review at midnight eye sounded pretty positive.

I saw the Cannes awards went:

1) Fahrenheit 9/11
2) South Korea's "Old Boy"
3) Thailand's "Tropical Malady"

Maggie Cheung got top actress, Yagira Yuuya (a 14 year old Japanese boy) won top actor.

Kind of a surprise! I haven't (yet) seen any of these movies and am just repeating second-hand-observations, but I had read that "2046" was generally considered a shoe-in for the top award, and that "Old Boy" was being dismissed out-of-hand. Also, that Fahrenheit 9/11 was clearly inferior to the good-not-great Bowling for Columbine.
