The Academy Awards are Sunday, February 27th, so this is a perfect time to start making your own "what the hell" predictions. I'll post all the major category nominees here as well as link to the Oscars web site, and then whoever wants to play: just make your predictions for each listed category.

Whoever gets the most right, I will personally send a free promotional screener DVD of a decent film or two. There, how's that for motivation! In the event of a tie, the tiebreaker question is: Guess the final running time of this year's award show.

Deadline is: Post your picks before 5pm PST Sunday Feb 27. Either repaste/reply to this posting and put an "X" by your pick, or just cut and paste each predicted winner.

The Nominees:

I'm a little surprised at how few of these movies I've seen. Since most of it is just guessing (psychic guessing!) I'll give myself a prize if I do better that 50%. I wonder how good a score 50% will be...?

My list consists of wild guesses (who gets a chance to see the short subjects?), wild second-guessing of the Academy and a sentimental favorite or two (Virginia Madsen).

I'm rooting for Madsen, too; on paper, that category should be a total toss-up. All five women deserve the award. Paper doesn't count for much, of course, and I know Blanchett is considered the favorite. As much as I love her though, I'm rooting for Madsen. But any one of them winning the award would be hard to argue against.

Sophie Okonedo certainly deserves a nod. She gave a very powerful performance in Hotel Rwanda. I haven't seen the other films yet.

And yea, there was much cutting and pasting. I'm strictly going on the Academy's penchants for awarding things on a sentimental and "throwing of the bone". I hope I'm wrong.

Yes. It's just a visual trick, though. I'm still getting 64x64 for properties.

After this is over, or maybe before, we should discuss who we wish would win the Oscars. For example, I'd hope Ray did better than I listed, here. I just think there's so much publicity and chatter for a certain other film that that's how it's going to win its categories.

Also, good grief, who picks which foreign films get nominated? The category has left out some very good films for years, now.

I've had some bones to pick with them on those over the years, but have sort of given up. The Foreign Film process is a bit strange but part of it is up to each country as far as which film they designate to represent them. Sometimes they don't choose what many outsiders would deem their best film... For example, this year, Moolade was easily one of the best films of the year but wasn't even Senegal's representative for the foreign film Oscar, for whatever reason - politics, who knows?

Then picking among the five finalists, even more so than the often comes down to whose watched the free screenings among Academy voters, and among those it's often been older, more conservative, sentimental-leaning voters.

Usually, despite all this, some deserving films make it into the final five, and sometimes even win! Still, that category's process needs some fixing.

I'm sure there'll be a few surprises along the way!

You still have two days to post your own predictions and give yourself a chance to win a free screener DVD or two! Whoo hoo.

True. Sometimes I see titles I know nothing about before they make the list, and they turn out to be great, and I'm thankful. Too often though, in this category, the movies I haven't already seen, if they don't win, don't make it to my area, and are hard to find on video. That goes double for documentaries and quadruple for shorts, unfortunately.

Thankfully, of course, GC's Daily at least gives me a heads-up on more movies, even if a lot of them have to be chased down elsewhere. It would be really cool if even half the movies mentioned there made it to GC stock. :)

I'm simply unable to cast my ballot for every single category and have to disqualify myself since I havent seen every damned feature, documentary or short, I mean, who has?

Best Picture

Will win: The Aviator:
Could win: Million Dollar Baby
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind should have been a contender by edging out Finding Neverland. Need I say more, er, well, in fact, yes! See Best Actor category...

Best Director

Will win: Martin Scorsese
Could win: Clint Eastwood

Best Actor

Will win: Jamie Foxx
Could win: Clint Eastwood
Paul Giamatti should have been a contender by edging out Johnny Depp who has been much better elsewhere, and most certainly will eventually land the role of a lifetime.

Best Actress

Will win: Hilary Swank
Could win: Annette Bening

Best Supporting Actor

Will win: Morgan Freeman
Could win: Alan Alda
Should win: Thomas Haden Church
Peter Sarsgaard should have been a contender, I dunno, I like Clive Owen a great deal, but his performance in Closer, as with much of that film, just didn't reach me.

Best Supporting Actress

Will win: Cate Blanchett
Could win: Virginia Madsen

Art Direction

The Aviator

Cinematography

The Aviator

Costume Design

The Aviator

Film Editing

The Aviator

Foreign Film

Will win: The Sea Inside
Could win:
House of Flying Daggers and Moolade should have been contenders

Animated Feature

The Incredibles

Documentary Feature

I have no idea because none of the films has made it to my local theaters.

Makeup

Ditto above, maybe the Alexander wig department should get a nod here! ;- )

Music (Song)

Somewhere Over the Rainbow? Who knows, and who really cares is right, underdog!

Music (Score)

Nothing special comes to mind here either, except to say that they should just give the award to Elmer Bernstein. Period.

Sound Editing

Spider-Man 2

Sound Mixing

The Aviator

Visual Effects

Spider-Man 2

Writing (Adapted Screenplay)

Will win: Sideways
Could win: Million Dollar Baby

Writing (Original Screenplay)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I can't see how The Aviator could even be nominated in this category since it is culled from so many different sources, and why isn't Before Sunset listed in this category instead of Adapted Screenplay?

Tiebreaker question: Guess the final running time of this year's award show. (Whoever comes closest.)

Anything past three hours is too long!

Some double tiebreaker questions: How do you think Chris Rock will fare as host? Will the ratings prevail or sink? Btw, has anyone been following the Chris Rock/Matt Drudge debacle?

No one has. Especially the Academy members! That's why it's Predict the Oscars! Not "Who do you think should win an Oscar?" It's more like "How corny can it get? Your guess is as good as mine!"
