Catullus	post #1  on October 2, 2008 - 6:55 PM PDT   so im watching the debate and she is ranting and raving on the fact that Obama would be willing to have discussions with leaders of countries such as Iran and N Korea, Cuba etc. She starts going on a tangent about how that would be dangerous (to have talks lol) and how those countries hate us and hate our freedoms and she starts listing off freedoms... and she EFFING HAD THE GALL TO SAY WOMENS RIGHTS... I wanted to slap her through the tv at that point... how can she even mention womens rights with a straight face. Is it wrong to hope she gets run over by a bus?

But technically, if you're doing to be an ass about it, women's rights doesn't necessarily mean reproductive rights. Though, personally, I find them to be one and the same. I wish Dems would stand up for themselves on the issue. By the CDC's count, there's 850,000 abortions or thereabouts per year. There are around two million families waiting to adopt infants. So, if we got rid of abortion...in 3-5 years, we'd start seeing babies in orphanages. Almost half of the abortions are from African-American women (and how many Southern, Christian families want a black baby, really? Hmph!). Basically, the idea that adoption will somehow solve the issue of abortion is naive and the right should've been called out on it. They also should be called out on the fact that there are a LOT of kids in foster care, waiting for adoptive parents, right now. I'm not 100% pro-choice. I don't like abortion. But I like the alternative even less. I'd prefer that the government and other organizations do a lot more simply to make sure if never gets to the point that abortion is needed. Doing away with abstinence-only education would be a good idea. And let's stop telling teenagers that sex is bad, sex is a sin, etc. Not all of them are smart of enough to figure out, on their own, that a lot of that is exaggerated.

And of course most supporters will claim that as victory; "see she's not a backwoods moron". Some victory. No, Palin seems to have a grasp of some very fundamental aspect of politics. You can make any asinine comment you want devoid of any facts, just make sure you spout the buzzwords. I think she called McCain and herself "mavericks" about 20 times. Thankfully, Biden is no Lieberman or Edwards and he spoke with intelligence and emotion. Palin just reminded me of the kidnapped wife in "Fargo".

You can't fight for equality then ask to be treated special because of your gender. Especially if you're on the road to becoming the first female president (and I mean in case McCain wins and kicks, she's up). Women's rights is an oxymoron. We have the right to be treated just like anybody else, and that's it. Not because we're women, but because we're human.
underdog	post #9  on October 2, 2008 - 11:43 PM PDT   Lots of interesting post-debate commentary from various pundits and wrap-ups of commentary from elsewhere all in one handy section at Huffington Post. There are also a few select video clips there if you missed the debate, though I'm sure the whole thing in its entirety will be posted online (if it isn't already) as well. As usual, it depends on who you talk to as far as who did well, or who "won," but with the bar set very low for Palin, I'm not sure what it's saying but she didn't go underneath it. Most of the pundits, both Democratic and GOP that were quoted on cable news and online afterwards seemed to give Biden a victory. If you read most of the Facebook statuses and comments for all the people who I'm connected with on FB, for what it's worth, it wasn't even close. Polls of independents during and after the debate show it not very close either. But definitely check it out online if you missed it.

Then you look at the Iraq war... it would be hard to pin its utter failure on him but he certainly did not win it either. Or is there some other war that I forgot about it that Mccain singlehandedly won... LOL

When the F did McCain EVER demonstrate that he knew how to win, let alone wage a war? The one war he was in he sat it out, although at least he was in country as opposed to his good buddy Bush, our commander in chief... McCain knows what it feels like to be shot down and be a prisoner, and he's gotten more than enough mileage out of THAT. He shouldn't get credit for other war-related stuff. Otherwise this debate was pretty boring. Everyone more or less stuck to the talking points we've all heard before and the moderator didn't help... she didn't really ask any pointed, off-beat questions. It was all too civilized and polite. I shoulda taped it to use as a non-chemical sleep-aid.

But hey Republicans are the penultimate hypocrites so yea.

The weird thing is, I get to work at 8 and handle peoples pensions and retirement funds for that whole two hours I'm still asleep.

They did, by and large, stick to talking points, but at least Biden was attempting to debate her. Palin, on the other hand, absolutely stuck to talking points. She couldn't even respond when the moderator asked her if she wanted to rebuff something about McCain. Her response was something like...I may not stay on the topic the moderator and Mr. Biden want me to...yada, yada, I'm an independent maverick...yada yada, I have a vagina! Ahem.
