Does anyone have recommendations for good caper movies? My tolerance for dumbness is low enough that these don't have to be GREAT movies, just good. I've got a thing for capers and am having trouble finding more.
Here's a basic list of what I'm talking about:
Oceans 11 (see what I mean about tolerance for dumbness?)
House of Games
The Score
The Heist
The Italian Job (again, tolerance is everything)
The Great Train Robbery
Heat

I few that I've enjoyed:
Rififi
The Asphalt Jungle (not available on DVD, unfortunately)
A Fish Called Wanda
Three Kings
The Killing
The Killers
The Killers
No, I didn't accidentally type The Killers twice. The first one stars Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner, the second stars Angie Dickenson, Lee Marvin, and Ronald Reagan. They are part of a wonderful two-disc set from Criterion.
I've also heard rather good things about The Lavender Hill Mob, but I haven't seen it yet.
The new Ladykillers movie from the Coen Brothers looks pretty good too. The original is available on GreenCine. |

I would have to 2nd all of Brockton's recommendations, especially Rififi and The Killing.
One I really enjoyed, slightly caperish, is Get Shorty. What happened to Barry Sonnenfeld????
Burt Reynolds last decent film before being saved by P.T. Anderson was a real good caper; Breaking In.
Also, I found Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels to be much better than Snatch
If you liked the Mamet films, the one I really got into was The Spanish Prisoner. And if you liked Heat, try Michael Mann's debut Thief. Haven't seen it in a while, but I think it holds up.
Speaking of not having seen something in a long time, there was Bank Shot which I saw at a very young age, and remember thinking it was very funny. I'd be curious to see it again.

Thanks for replying to my post. I'm unable to reply because I'm a non-paying member...doh! I accidentally was a paying member for just long enough to post ('bout a half-hour), then corrected my subscription and now cannot post. Hadn't realized that only paying members could post. Again with the "doh!"

How to Steal a Million - Not available at GreenCine yet. It looks like it's on DVD. Someone should request it (I have it on VHS). Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole in a William Wyler film! |

Kinda, but I would file it as more a chase film. The theft takes place in the beginning of the film so I personally wouldn't call it a caper. Caper films should be mostly about the preperation and carrying out of the crime. |

In addition the fine films mentioned already, may I recommend one of the best "bumbling caper" films (is that a sub-subgenre?) ever:
Big Deal on Madonna Street, starring one of Eoliano's favorites, Marcello Mastroianni! Magnifico!
It was remade badly by Louis Malle as Crackers, and again, sort of, as the not too bad little movie, Welcome to Collinwood.

I think of Running Out Of Time as a caper movie, although it's not the kind of caper that many people would expect.
The Hot Rock has been mentioned as is one of my current favorite capers, along with Cercle Rouge.
Another French one is touchez pas au grisbi, which isn't on DVD now, but should be shortly. There's a restored print playing the art-house circuit.
And no one has mentioned The Grifters which is a unique con film.
While it's not as good as Spanish Prisoner, House Of Games is another good Mamet con/caper film. |

| TOPKAPI, by Jules Dassen, 1964, is not on DVD, but it's real good! And I have seen THE LAVANDER HILL MOB, and it's great fun too. And there's also David Mamet's recent HEIST, which wasn't as good as HOUSE OF GAMES or THE SPANISH PRISONER, but it's worth seeing. |
