Here's the scenario: like that guy Tom Hanks played in Cast Away, tomorrow you will find yourself alone on an isolated island with no indication of when, if ever, you will be found and rescued. Instead of having the companionship of a volleyball, you will have a portable DVD player, and unlimited supply of batteries, and 10 DVDs. Only ten, mind you. Given your state of mind today, what would those 10 titles be?
Here's my list (which I'll probably want to change 5 minutes from now):
Vertigo The Big Sleep Rashomon Pulp Fiction Barton Fink Being John Malkovich Singin' in the Rain The Godfather The Umbrellas of Cherbourg Sullivan's Travels
What does your list look like? |

| i will put in another list later but for now, for today's state of mind, i would take with me ten of the longest fun movies ever to fit on 10 DVDs. |

Ten TITLES, OR ten DVDs? I would take any 10 titles that are multi-disc sets. I figure I'd need at least 5 discs to form the letter "S" and 8 discs to form the letter "O". That's 18 discs to spell out a reflective "SOS" sign. I wonder if there's any way to make a radio out of a DVD player? Maybe I can use the laser to signal airplanes at night, by bouncing the beam off a DVD... |

| Alright. Ten single titles. For the sake of argument, let's say that special features and the like are irrelevant to the question. |

What I'd say now in my comfy apt. is the following: The Matrix Mulholland Drive Fight Club Wages of Fear Being John Malkovich Goodfellas Godfather Grosse Pointe Blank Donnie Darko Dead Man (and I'm still not sure why I like it or even if I do!)
In reality, I'd probably get a bunch of porn... -Mark

| Well I very much like Brockton's idea of "Singin' in the Rain!" I'd also definitely add "The Adventures of Prince Achmed." Throw in some Cocteau, some Bergman, some Orson Welles, some Hitchcock, some Jackie Chan, something with Johnny Depp, "La Salamandre" [since I can't find it otherwise!], and a surprise [what's the good of being on a desert island if you don't have a surprise??!] |

I'll probably want to change mine every five minutes, too, or at least weekly, but off the top of my head, here are 10 DID's that would help while away the hours on the desert island:
1) How To Escape From Desert Islands When Stranded
2) Singin' in the Rain (me too! That film gives me so much pleasure every time I see it, and I'm not even a big musicals fan.)
3) Lord of the Rings -- the whole shebang, and no cries of cheating by calling that one movie :-P
4) Sullivan's Travels -- me too, again; one of my favorites, it almost gives me goosebumps the amount of humor and humanity that courses through it
5) Young Frankenstein
6) Raiders of the Lost Ark
7) Seven Samurai
8) North by Northwest -- so many Hitchcocks to choose from, but this one is so epic, entertaining and wonderful I'd watch it over and over again
9) The Looney Tunes Collection box set -- sorry, I'm cheating and calling that a "title" -- need something to cheer me up while alone
(er, I'm avoiding putting porno on this public version of my DID list)
10) Annie Hall
11) Fellini, either 8 1/2 or Nights of Cabiria
12) Buster Keaton -- probably The General or Sherlock Jr |

PS: Yes, I cheated a bit with 2 extras -- but of course the first one is a joke, and the Looney Tunes one is sort of a bonus item that the judges may disqualify. ;-)

Mmm, I bet there will be a Giant Boxed Set of the Whole Shebang in a couple of years. |
