Poor Erin... tried to start a thread and looked where all the men took it - to food and boobs.

> Soooo, what about Russ Meyer's satire, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls? The one written by critic Roger Ebert... Heard it's way over the top but have yet to see it. Now that it's out on DVD I'm gonna check it out, and compare and contrast. The original one is so campy but pretty classic in that genre.

The original is another beast entirely. BTVOTD was on TCM just a few nights ago and was only able to catch a bit of it, and as you say, it looks way OTT. But it also looked like a boisterously colorful, typically 70s artifact, and very entertaining to boot. Criterion was to do this but Fox apparently withdrew the rights, although Criterion likely worked on some of the extras, including Ebert's commentary. Eric Henderson more or less confirms this in his ebullient Slant review. Would enjoy watching the DVD if only to listen to Ebert's commentary, which Henderson thinks is probably his best.

My apologies to those of you determined to keep this thread off-topic.

And my apologies to Erin, too, for being such a non-believer...

I do feel bad for such an immediate hijack. Unfortunately I have utterly nothing to say on "The Valley of the Dolls" and haven't seen it. I did like "Welcome to the Doll-house" and its (non)sequel "Palindromes".

Ah! Lisp! i remember programing in LISP and I remember Abelman and Sussman and the fanatical cult following it had in Northern California Coast programming society! I actually really liked lisp in that its concept was incrediably clear, precise, and flexible. However, it really seemed that its syntax (multiply-emebedded parenthesis around *EVERYTHING*) was either a cruel joke or an engineer in *DEEP* denial about it's obvious headache inducing eyeball parsing.

Um, so what brings LISP to your mind, NLee? It's not something as obvious as the programming of boobs ((.)(.)) is it?

But obviously not bad enough to prevent you from immediately hijacking it again. ^_^

I failed to close the parenthesis in my post#14. Oh the horror!

What I heard is that the use of parenthesis makes LISP extremely easy to parse for the compiler, because everything is just "cad" and "cadr" surrounded by a pair of parenthesis. Unfortunately that's not the case for those people without emacs.

(for the young people: emacs is a programmer's editor popular in the 1980's)

This is exactly true. I never got the hang of emacs so I was *constantly* counting my parenthesis by hand and what a nightmare that was.

LISP was extremely elegant and nice to use and the concept of everything being a "pair" was the extremely rare programming combination of being both precise and flexible. (for example, a list is simply a "pair" of the first item and the rest of the list.) It had the self-referential recursive charm (programmers can't resist finding the recursion the greatest and most profound joke in the world; mention "set of all sets" and "list of all list" or define the Internet as "a network of networks" and you'll get a few hours of rhapsodic lecturing by a geek in a euphoric state)-- LISP had the recursive charm up the wazoo. Oops, excuse me, LISP programmers don't say "wazoo"; they say "yin-yang". I forgot.

Ah, them was the daze!

I would like to state for the record that having determined the definitive nature of the above statement, I thought the subject re. Valley of the Dolls to be beyond further discussion or dispute and therefore closed. Thereupon I browsed Erin's blog site for which a link appears on her profile, and noticing that one of her favorite topics of conversation was indeed "food" I endeavored to continue the conversation in that direction.

Let me further note, NLee et al, that nowhere on her blog or profile does Erin state that she is interested in discussing boobs. But that's just the nature of a GC discussion thread, so que sera sera....

Let this be a lesson for young girls who disclose their personal info on blog sites. You never know when some middle-aged pervert may be reading it.

As a middle-aged moral prevert, I object to that last remark!

Btw, I suspect that Erin is a GreenCine employee, though I could be mistaken. In any event, it would be nice to hear from her again, if only to defend her opinion of Valley of the Dolls, or failing that, maybe just to share her enthusiasm for cooking with us. Then again, she might have been frightened off for good and may never come back ever, ever again.

I think y'all scared poor Erin back to her workstation, sorting through your mail, and away from all the boobs here.

Er, boob-talk here, I meant.

Eoliano! They're using some of your icons in a Criterion ad on the lower left side of the page there! Did you give them permission?

I pity the fools!

Though I certainly do enjoy food, Hamano. Thanks for noticing.
