Wow. I have not seen a single one of your top ten, there, shiftless. Of your honorable mentions, I have only seen "The Dark Knight" (and I am sorry I did) and "Eastern Promises" (I loved it).
I don't do lists but I do have to mention that my life has been enriched with the discovery of Visual Art/Key's anime series three: Air, Clannad, and Kanon. Air and Kanon were originally ero games but the stories were so good, they had to make a non-explicit anime version, and even then, it ain't about the fan service. Since when has any U.S. porn ever had that happen - that the story was so good, a broadcast friendly version was made?
Terribly sentimental, I am afraid, so if you loved the "The Dark Knight" and have a heart of stone, you may not want to waste your time.
But I loves me a bittersweet love story that is loving animated. O, and if the series are too much of a committment, there are movies also.
And if you see Fuku-chan, be sure to take one her starfish. It would make her so happy. |

Yeah, I was mostly playing catch up in '08 after living under a rock for quite some time, movie-wise. I loved Tokyo Godfathers too.
But thanks for your list! Now I have added a few more movies to my queue, which is all I really wanted from this thread, some ideas for later viewing. I left off the anime I watched from my list since I am so new to it overall, but I would have to say I enjoyed Haibane Renmei and Gilgamesh the most. |

well, I'm including only the movies I have never seen before this year. In no particular order:
A Taste of Cherry O Lucky Man Female Trouble Late Marriage Zodiac Alfie (with Michael Caine) Kon Ichikawa's "The Burmese Harp" and "Fires on the Plain" Only Angels Have Wings Save the Green Planet The Enigma of Kasper Hauser and a couple of Hitchcock earliest films; "The Ring" and "Blackmail"
Also, by sheer coincidence I managed to watch Sam Fuller's "I Shot Jesse James" about one week after seeing "The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford" and it was fun to see the two very different treatments of the same subject. Both were very good, but Fuller's film was maybe half as long and just as effective. |

I have only see a few eps of Paranoid Agent, I will have to do the series soon.
I highly recommend "Paprika" and "Millenium Actress". Need I even mention, "Perfect Blue"? Is there any Kon Satoshi that I missed?

Just saw it recently and loved it (of course!) But the one thing I did not expect is Al Gore as Al Gore. After this and his SNL skits, I think he really needs to consider a career in comedy. He can be very funny!

Yah. Al Gore actually appeared in a couple of other Futurama episodes, including one classic ep which also featured Gary Gygax (D&D inventor) and Stephen Hawking.
Stephen Hawking: "Great. The entire universe was destroyed." Fry: "Destroyed? Then where are we now?" Al Gore: "I don't know. But I can darn well tell you where we're not: The *universe*!"
--- Fry: "Who are you people?" Al Gore: "I'm Al Gore. And these are my vice presidential action rangers. A groupd of top-nerds whose sole duty is to prevent disruptions in the space-time continuum." Fry: "I thought your sole duty was to cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate." Al Gore: "That, and protect the space-time continuum. Read the Constitution."
