There was supposedly a movie made on the characters from Cowboy Bebop after the series ended. Does anybody have an idea if that movie is going to make it onto an American DVD, and when? Inquiring minds want to see :)

It's called "Knocking On Heaven's Door" but I don't know if or when a domestic version will come out. Check out buyanimedvd.com, sasavcd.com, or yesasia.com - they have it and TONS of other anime that's unavailable here and LOTS cheaper. Of course, they're bootleg. But the quality is very good and the price can't be beat. I just got the complete Evangelion (TV+all movies on 5 DVDs) and Studio Ghibli (12 movies on 6 DVDs) in nice box sets. You can find what you want at those sites, but check eBay first before you buy - you can save even more there!

Of course, bootleg means copied with regional coding, right? I dont' have a region free player and my japanese is not that hot (e.g., "more sake please" is my linguistic limit).

No, check it out, these are region free discs with optional english or chinese subs. There is a little logo in the corner from time to time, but otherwise they look good, stereo sound, menus, the works.

According to Anime News Service (link), Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment bought the U.S. rights to the Cowboy Bebop movie. No news re: release dates that I've heard.

For those of you in the San Francisco Bay Area, I just saw that the Cowboy Bebop movie will be premiered at the SF Metreon Festival of Anime on October 12 and 13.

Ah, I guess I should say that this event is not affiliated in any way with GreenCine, yada, yada. I just saw this info and wanted to spread the news. :-)

Fansub versions of the movie have been floating around since the beginning of this year. You can download them online if you know where to look, often in DivX format. The movie is okay, it takes place sometime before the 20th episode or so. It's nowhere as good as the series... it's more like a very, very long episode that should have been 30 min. long. Of course, Bebop is my all-time favorite anime so I still enjoyed it.

Nope, that's a pretty good summation, if you ask me. It seems both odd and not-so-odd that she'd even bother with the whole apples-&-oranges exercise in the first place, but it probably says a lot about who she thinks Salon's readers are: You've heard a lot about this whole Japanese animation thing, and then, adventurous as you are, you even went out and saw the one that won the Oscar, so, since that's you're only point of reference, I'll have to begin there...

Imagine a review of Irreversible beginning, "Ok, you saw that Amelie flick, right? Well, ok. This is a movie from France, too, but, er..."

its going to be called "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie" and its coming out in the US from columbia tri-star on June 24 i think. They couldn't call it knocking on heavens door since there was already a song with the same name (by dylan).

saw it and liked it and would happly listen to the music again. i think there are a few episodes of the series i'd choose to go back to over seeing the movie again.

i also see the writer's point about this being more fun than spirited away, except that i thought the dub was a little messed up... the jazzy character expression and music was one movie, the dialogue was another.

i guess i should say that as a bebop fans go, i would happily produce "cowboy bebop: ed and ein go hawai'i!"

I'll be first in line to watch it. One of my favorite Bebop episodes is Mushroom Samba, and I was delighted to see Ed and Ein go on another adventure in the movie.

That was a good part of the movie. My only real complaint about the movie is that it focused too much on Spike, who is my least favorite of the crew.
