Went to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival this weekend.
Patti Smith really rocks.

I was there, too! I was the guy standing in the grass looking irritated by the second hand pot smoke but enjoying the music. That guy!
I also loved Richard Thompson, Conor Oberst, the songwriters circle, and a little Elvis Costello (had seen him there last year though). So much to choose from. Who else did you catch?
And it's all free! |

The Carolina Chocolate Drops were a lot of fun. I'd seen them once before and they put on an even better show at HSB.
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings were amazing, and Conor Oberst sat in on one song with them.
Seeing T Bone Burnett on Friday night was nice, because I got to see a bit of Steve Earle and Elvis Costello (since I didn't see their main sets).
It was pretty amazing to see an 87 year old Doc Watson playing away.
The food was great, too. Chicken and shrimp paella? Beignets? Hand-dipped ice cream bars? Yum. |

Nice! I didn't go on Friday though I was amused and curious by the prospects of seeing MC Hammer (!) at the fest that afternoon.
The food is excellent for a music fair, you're right! So many tasty temptations, not the usual crap.
I wish this happened several times a year. |

Seeing MC Hammer there would have been a nice bit of cognitive dissonance, but I didn't get there until it was time for the last set of the evening on Friday.
This was my first year. It's maddening to have so much interesting music playing simultaneously, but you have to just pick a stage, let go and enjoy.

| Had a fair number of friends who attended this year, heard nothing but great things. Little things like this make me miss my old Bay Area home. Alas. |

Yeah, that festival can only happen because it is the Bay Area. I can't imagine 700,000 people showing up for a free concert in L.A. without a lot of grief.
