weezy	post #1  on November 3, 2008 - 11:00 AM PST   Reserving some time off on Thursday to check out "Two Lovers" - Joaquin Phoenix's last film before retirement, and the Korean flick "The Good the Bad and the Weird". Rush-only ticks available for Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The Wrestlers"... so many good movies playing this year! Anyone else going to check stuff out?

Didn't come out of the theater pondering anything profound, but I did sit through the majority of the film with a grin on my face. There were some points of the movie where you really have to go along for the ride and forego logic, but, it's worth it. Quite a few really funny moments in the film had the whole theater laughing, which was nice. Two enjoyable elements from the film - excellent stage design, more prop heavy and colorful than Sukiyaki Western Django but just as pleasing to the eye. The black market "ghost town" they create is a real spectacle, a perfect backdrop for some cool action scenes. Also the cool, modern soundtrack was catchy and blended elements from many genres, including hip hop! Actually... one more thing worthy of mention, the "Bad" character... ooh my my, that man is devilishly handsome. What a build, too. When he took his shirt off he had me swooning like a 14 year old watching the Jonas Brothers. The "Good" lead was cool as ice and very charismatic. I thought all the male leads put in awesome performances. To compare to Sukiyaki Western Django - less character development, way more grandiose action scenes, similarly beautiful cinematography and costume design, and NO stupid cameos! The ending of the movie is less than satisfying, but the film as a whole is worth the romp.

By the way, I recently read that the same company that is releasing "Let the Right One In" (starts tomorrow in SF!) will be releasing "TimeCrimes". Nice going! Should be appearing in theatres next month.

The director, Nacho Vigalondo, is a young and upbeat guy who rocked out completely to Guns 'n Roses' "Sweet Child of Mine" for the entire duration of the song, even though the program that displayed the lyrics gave out half way into it. He even tried to do one-handed push-ups on stage. His intro to the film was charming and humble; he seemed very pleased to be enjoying such positive reception for his "strange sci fi" flick in the states. His youth and exuberance give me the impression that he has nothing but great success to look forward to. As for the movie itself, I thought it was thoroughly entertaining. The lead actor gave a phenomenal performance. He was a purely comedic force in some scenes, and Macbeth-like in others. It was really interesting how the entire film takes within a small world, but the questions it tackles about space and time, moral conundrums, etc., are the biggies. Some GREAT moments of tension, there were 10 minutes of the movie where I was reeling in my chair with anticipation! My minor criticisms are that the colors were washed out (with intention, I'm sure, but I like my films to be a bit more vibrant), and some of the time loops are predictable. But I do encourage everyone to support this director and see the movie during its wider Dec. 12 release.
