author topic: Display # of reviews factored into average rating

On search results and movie lists, currently only the average rating is listed. It would be nice if the number of ratings contributing to that average were also displayed right next to it. Without knowing the number of reviews, I find the average rating almost useless. If you go through a list of movies and pick the highest rated ones, they often have only one or two votes. A average rating of 7 based on 30 votes is far more compelling than an average rating of 9 based on 1 vote from the director's mother.

A tweak that might partially achieve the same effect would be to list the numerical average in the same HTML table cell as the graphical version. If the average is something like x.2, then I know at least a fair number of people have rated the movie. (This is obviously not as accurate as just listing the number of reviews, but I'm just throwing out alternate ideas that might be more likely to be implemented.)

I'll add this (or some slight variation of it) to our list of possible forthcoming improvements.

Thirded, in the pursuit of statistically signficant information.

Check out the rating system over at (a fine Internet radio station). They now show the distribution of votes for each song rating. Tom Waits gets a fairly good rating, and The Indigo Girls less so.

Anyway -- look! a working rating distribution system. Wouldn't that be cool for Greencine?
