| I don't know if the script-fu underneath the GreenCine Public Discussions board is sympathetic to this idea or not, but I imagine that discussion might be more lively on the discussion boards if there's an option to subscribe to them as mailing lists, instead of just going through the (relatively clunky) web interface. Of course, mailing lists have issues of their own - maybe it's easier for a despoiler-of-the-commons to wreak havoc therein - but it still might be something worth considering. |

I think that's quite a good idea. Or perhaps we could simply create an opt-in GreenCine user mailing list in addition to the forums? After all, not everyone who would utilize the forums would want to be on the mailing list.

I think that any mailing list should be topic-specific like the forums. I would subscribe to greencine-foriegn and greencine-indie, for example - have a choice of interface (web or mail or digest) would be nice.

| i still don't get how somebody can talk about one kind of movie only. it's almost like only talking about movies that start with a vowel or something. |

Well, to address most of these issues, we could simply open up a Greencine members list on Yahoo Groups or something of that nature.
Anyone official from Greencine have anything to say on this issue?

"Film" is just a medium. Being interested in *all* film is like being interested in all printed matter or something. We really only care about certain kinds of film - I'm not going to get into the discourse about Henry Potter, any more than being in a book club will incline me to talking about what's printed on the back of a cereal box. I can talk about it if I have to, but I'm just not going to participate in an ongoing chat about it - there's only so many hours in the day.

[WHuber] > "Film" is just a medium. Being interested in *all* film is like being interested in all printed matter or something. <
"film" is; "filmmaking" isn't. same thing with "printed matter" and "writing." the medium exists because people like how it lets us talk to each other. if i say, i love good writing, i love to talk about good writing, then it's the language i'm interested in, not the transportation device. what i love could (and does) include the back of a cereal box, even if only to say, "look, captive audience rhetoric!"
everybody drinks water. water can come in pipes or buckets or cups or hands or straight from a cloud. some people only drink water that comes in bottles. arguments about the nature of water, the quality of water pulled from a particular spring or tap, are more useful (and less waste-inducing) than talking about the benefits of one disposable bottle design over another.
if film is a bottle ... then filmmaking is putting water in a bottle ... if we're restricting a conversation about water in general to only discuss water delivered in such and so way, pretty much declaring that fizzy water is the only "real" water, well, i think that means we've gotten distracted.
on the other hand, there are class issues, it's probably good to think about that, "classy" water, "hip" water, "funky" water. how the same water served to three different people might come in different style glasses, so as not to insult anyone's standing. this is what ads try to do, to convince people that different bottle designs actually contain different water. "this is special water, i made it just for you!"
water water. |

These are intriguing suggestions. I've passed it on to the "higher-ups" here at GC to see what the feasibility (and desire) is to do such a thing.
I can't imagine too many people subscribing to GreenCine-Feedback list ( hee hee) but some of the others might be popular, particularly as this company continues to add subscribers. There are already quite a few DVD related newsletters and discusison groups flying around (DVD Talk, etc) but we'll see.

Hi there, dennis! here with pseudo official word as one of the managing partners.
We love the idea of web discussion groups <--> mailing lists. eLine, the software service firm that developed GreenCine, also created a piece of software called SmartConf that was running the CBS MarketWatch boards for a while.
Implementation for GreenCine might be a more difficult issue as we would have to police non-member postings in particular, which may be community spoilers. Hate to think that's the way it goes, but you guys have been on the Net and you all know how ugly it can get. HOWEVER, a lightweight solution like starting a Yahoo! group is something GreenCine would not be opposed to. I've seen various success scenarios of support groups running through Yahoo! as a digital photography fan, I use the product Breezebrowser...the product has its own support and fan group run out of Yahoo! groups, and it seems quite successful, polite and useful.
I'll take a look into some external site options...If I find something and set it up, I'll announce here. If I lag out and the wonderful GC community wants to pick up, doing something like starting a yahoo! group might do the trick.
I'll let you know soon, gang...
best--
dennis!
