However, I only recently got rid of my 1997 edition of GoodFellas which was the only existing edition available until this year, and rest assured, it was a flipper. Fyi, the 1998 and 1999 editions listed on IMDb are Region 2 discs. > ---------------------------------
It is possible for you both to be correct. Netflix sometimes has special versions of titles. Sometimes the discs say for rent only, (I had one of these last week), and sometimes they actually say NetFlix. (so I've been told, I haven't seen one yet during the times I've been a member) My guess is that some of these special discs may actually lack some extras, or have more advertising for other movies, etc. |

I can't see how that's possible, but maybe underdog will chime in at some point and give us some info. I've googled "Netflix GoodFellas flipper", and as far as I've been able to tell, Netflix had the Warner Bros flipper... Nuff said. |

It is possible I had a flipper and don't remember it but I don't think so. Eo, do you remember at what point it had to be flipped? It's possible I had to flip it but if so I think it was something like only 15 minutes or 25 minutes on the second disk. I still think I had a single disk from Netflix and don't see why Netflix wouldn't have had a region 2 disk whatever that means. Netflix *is* wrong about what disk they have of "Moscow does not believe in tears" (that I *will* insist upon) so they could just as easily be wrong about what version of Goodfellas they have. My imdb DVD details verifies that there *was* a single side version in 1999 so so far as I can tell this is a completely unverifiable, undiscreditable, unresolvable, and unimportant issue.
I don't know what region 2 means. My copy of netflix "About Schmidt" was a Netflix disk but I assumed that that meant Netflix had a liscence to burn their own disks, not that the disk would have any difference in content. My Northern exposure disks were burned by netflix but these were two sided disks which they burned as pairs of disks which they rented individually (which is pretty sleazy in my opinion...
I doubt very much netflix issue disks with their own content. |

When Tommy says, "How am I funny, like a clown? What is so funny about me? What the FUCK is so funny about me? Tell me. Tell me what's funny."

It was a single disc... it just needed to be flipped, which flipped me out, in fact, I am still flipped out!

To the best of my knowledge, Netflix does not rent Region 2 (PAL) discs.
I wonder if underdog is avoiding this thread... |

Actually didn't it flip in the other scene where Tommy basically harangues a kid and shoots him in foot and laughs and irritates the kid into cussing him out and tommy shoots his and is annoyed that nobody wants to help him dig the hole. "Awright, not like a never dug a hole before" he concludes.

I just didn't remember that. So for as I remember Goodfellas is the only "flipper" I've run across (although I've run across a lot of "(more) special features on other side") and "Moscow does not believe in tears" is the only split disk I've rented. (Note, eoliano, I am not saying those are the only ones of their kind in existance. I am saying those are the only ones of their kind that, I, woozy, have yet run across).

The kid who incites Tommy's rage in the social club was played by Michael Imperioli of The Sopranos

There are still lots of split discs and flippers out there, as well as non-anamorphic discs, though I've replaced all of my flippers, I'm still working on getting rid of the non-anamorphic discs in my collection as they become available since they look dreadful on my 16x9 monitor.

To clarify why GC doesn't carry Region 2 DVDs or discuss GC's double-dip rental policy when a single title is spread over two discs, or just to say hello. ; - )

I would be interested in hearing his response to GC's double-dip policy. |

| Actually, "Northern Exposure" via GC are two-sided flippers with two episodes per side so there are four episodes a rental. Netflix "cuts this discs into two one-sided discs so you only get two episodes a rental. That's kind of scuzzy. |

After restarting my BB membership last week, I discovered they now ship certain dual-disc titles at once, too. Like the 30th anniversary version of The Message. At last, I'll be able to compare the English version and the Arabic, since the film was actually shot twice, with some actors being different. (I just hope the Arabic disc has English subtitles :) )
I can't remember, did GC ever start doing this? |

I just now ran across this antique thread -- and the answer, as of March 2008, is, no, they still won't send the two halves of a movie together. Although it seems to still be under consideration.
The business about having to include two DVDs in a single mailer is a red herring; it isn't necessary, and no one else does it. You ship the two DVDs in separate mailers, but simultaneously, and count them as a single rental.
The newly reissued Warren Beatty 'Reds' is a perfect example of this problem.
How about it, guys? |

Just want to bump this thread. There are a few movies i'd really like to add to my queue, but are split over two discs (Seven Samurai, Gone With The Wind, for example). Any chance of GC considering bundling two-disc movies together?

Good topic. Seriously dude, I can NOT rant about this topic enough, particularly because the movie that seemingly started this topic was one that I myself have been burned by.
I had/have been wanting to watch "Stalker" for YEARS, certainly ever since I activated my GC account last June. Lo and behold, it's orange/yellow for ALL of those months, then FINALLY becomes Green and shows up as being-mailed in my Queue the last month.
Well, it arrives, I put it in the DVD player, watch it, film gets about an hour in, then STOPS, with no warning whatsover. Flabbergasted, I check GC again, see that the FULL film's split into two (and why?? Many of the bonus features on both discs seem to be the same...). So I add the 2nd disc to my Queue, and FORTUNATELY it arrives next... I don't have to wait another 7 months. Yet lo and behold, unless I seriously missed something, ALL I find on the disc are bonus features... again, many the same cheap bonus features that were on the 1st disc.
I cannot begin to express how pissed off I feel by all this. Immediately after this, I started calling local video stores, asking if they had "Stalker" on VIDEO-- yes, good old fashioned, reliable analog.
So F.U. Kino, for your stupid disc design. And WHY it would take over 6 months to get a disc for only PART of a film, that's a little over an hour, I still have NO idea... |

| Phasmatrope, sorry for your frustration on Stalker. We're waiting for new copies to come in to make sure there's no issues with the playback - it sounds like the one you received was defective. |

Well I appreciate the response. Admittedly I was in part a little frustrated, because I had tried posting a Review of the film here warning people to be aware of the same problem (since I doubt as it'd be as in demand if people knew they weren't going to be able to see the whole film), and for some reason my Review/warning didn't take/was rejected. And I'm not necessarily saying you guys are at fault, it probably is just Kino's fault. Why anyone would split a film over two DVDs, I have no idea... |

Ptrope, from what I can tell, that Kino disc should have the whole movie on that first disc. The 2nd disc is supposed to be bonus features. Again, hard to confirm or check without the disc itself. But supposedly it has two parts on one disc, and I don't know if that means part 2 was on side 2 of the dvd, which sometimes happens (but it should tell you that if so) or there's a break between parts (but again that should be clear). It's possible the disc itself is indeed defective too -- i.e., it gets stuck when it's supposed to switch over to part 2. No matter what, sounds like a frustrating disc design!

Stalker mystery solved! Looks like this was our mistake, and I'm very sorry for the confusion - the entire movie is indeed on disc 1. I believe we were carrying an older version before, and never updated the catalog listing to reflect that the new Kino disc has the entire feature on disc 1 and only bonus features on disc 2. Find the updated listing here.

heh, thanks for the update.
Now, about the original point of the thread: did GC ever make it policy to ship both halves of a 2 disc set (where the movie is actually split) at once?
