How about a Randomize Queue Button?

A little less than a year ago, some brave soul posted a suggestion for a randomize queue function; has anything come of that (other than a horde of anime fans showing up at the member's house with torches)?

Sometimes hearing a favorite song by chance on the radio just sounds better, doesn't it? I'd love to be able to be surprised by what film I find in the mailbox. And yeah, I'd be willing to punch in some code and click four buttons hidden throughout the GC site to indicate I was really, really, really, really sure I wanted to.

Be gentle,

Randomize would be cool! And how about a button that would instantly arrange the titles in alphabetical order? That would help with queue maintenance!

hmm i've been thinking about this all year.

how about instead of a randomize queue thing: a magic "surprise me" button that sets you up for a random movie from your queue the next time you're due to get one.

that way the order of the queue wouldn't be in danger and there could be a catch in the programming that would treat personal series properly.

How about a button that will make GreenCine send you a surprise title from dpowers' queue? That might be educational and enriching for other GreenCiners, and dpowers will have to work really hard to check what titles are being deleted from his queue!

Okay! Er... a parking attendant who has earned respect among the triads??? AND it's a true story? This better be good!

A randomize button would do away with queue orphans!

Of course, you could just load up your queue and not look at it for long periods of time if you wanted to be surprised.

This is exactly what I do. Every package in the mail is a surprise!

that works but sometimes it's hard not to scratch at the scab.

I like this idea a lot. Most of the time I want to get the movies at the top of my queue, but I like getting random stuff too. This way I could keep stuff I'm particularly interested in seeing at the top of my queue and still have a chance of getting the other stuff. (Of course, I could get the same effect by randomly picking a movie myself every so often and bumping it to #1, but it's more fun to have GreenCine surprise me.)

As a matter of fact, a randomize feature actually did exist in GreenCine waaay before we launched. It was one of the many things Apathos & I did back in the day that more or less drove the planners & QA crazy. There was a lot of stupid stuff, but there were a few that while they may confuse a lot of people, would be very beneficial to a few...and most importantly cool. Anyhow, you can see how we lost some of these arguments.

I would love to put this back in, if there is enough demand I don't see how we could deny our loyal customers. So please post, post, post & send email to feedback@greencine.com. requesting this. They love repetetive emails so feel free to send more than one.

I vote no. Life is short. Time is money. Like the Greenciner's work on more important things, since building inventory and getting rid of the red in the queue. A randomize button is not worth it.

Eek. I believe in free speech but yell "FIRE" in a crowded theater is wrong and what you are doing seems to be advocating spam and that is wrong. Borderline behavior at best, in my humble opinion.

...and why, oh, why did I take that ... i'm mean didn't I preview that! Sorry about the unterminated boldness.

Larbeck, I wouldn't take what I posted too literally. Would I advocate spamming our feedback pipe? Not intentionally. All I did was get excited about a feature I'm fond of and post some self-sarcasm. Granted somebody could take that in a way I didn't intend, but that's true of almost anything posted.

So let me restate, please do not spam us, but if you want this feature let us know somehow. If there is great enough demand, I'm sure it will appear sooner or later (series locking anybody?).

Also, I should mention, if you don't want the feature, let us know as well :)

if it's possible, i'd also like the digimonkeys to make sure that at least one of the discs i get sent each time be funny.

Long live pelikan and Apathos! Long live crazy cool stuff!

When hneline1 gets back I'm gonna ask her if these guys are really hard at work coding all this cool stuff for us, or if they're goofing off playing computer games all day!

You know, I'd like that too--not specifically a "funny movie" feature, but the ability to create your own subqueues with whatever category you like, "comedies" or "documentaries" or "pre-1956 movies with a star who's never won an Academy Award" or whatever, and designate that one of your movies come from that category. So if you got four movies, you could specify that one be anime, one be a foreign movie, and two come from your main queue. If there aren't any foreign movies available in your queue, then you could specify whether GreenCine should send you a movie from your main queue or wait for one to become available.

All of this programming to be done in the GreenCine staff's copious free time, of course.

Still, I vote no. Just one little vote.
