The Godfather II (Disc 1 of 2) (1974)

The best....better than the 1st....Pacino and DeNiro at their peaks, but the best performance is by John Cazale as Fredo who breaks Don Corleone's heart and everyone elses who watches the film...obviously the original is right at the top and I would even argue that Godfather III is in the top 20, but I will only list one of these and this is the best...

Once Upon a Time in America (Disc 1 of 2) (1984)

It is almost 4 hours long...but everytime I have ever seen it, it is so mesmerizing I have no choice but to watch the whole thing to the end....with James Woods and DeNiro as older men battling their lifetime of regrets...

Very few movies submerge you in a world quite like this one...after watching it it takes a few minutes to come back to your schnook like reality

Scarface (Anniversary Edition) (1983)

Scoff if you will, it is WAY over the top, but that is the point, it was critically reviled when it came out, but has stood the test of time and is undeniably influential and just plain fun to watch....

F*** The Departed, which was a piece of crap, THIS is the best Irish mob movie ever...Gary Oldman is unbelievable in a movie that also has Penn, Harris, Reilly, Turturro, etc...the slow motion shootout at the end intercut with the St Patrick's Day parade is epic....

King of New York (1990)

When I 1st saw this, I wasn't that impressed, but it gets better with ever viewing, despite David Caruso's horrible overacting....Walken is great but Laurence "Larry" Fishburne really steals the movie with his maniacal laughter....

Reservoir Dogs (15th Anniversary Edition) (1992)

A great example of minimalism, great dialogue and Tarantino's real gift, great casting....everyone is perfect in their roles...

Sadly the English are making better gangster movies these days, this was a tough call over The Krays and Layer Cake, both of which are great, but this movie kicks serious ass from the 1st frame and never lets up

Donnie Brasco (1997)

I read the book on which this was based and never thought Johnny Depp (who at this time I didn't think much of) could pull this off....boy was I wrong...he should have got an Oscar for this riveting true story....

I am not sure why so many people dislike this movie...I thought it was a powerful classic when I saw it in the theater, and if anything with the rise of the Tea Party and anti-immigration movement, it has become oddly prescient, worth another look and Daniel Day Lewis is so good, he makes up for any flaws in Leonardo or Cameron's performances....
