Anime Culture: Nice guys end up... with a Harem?
List creator: hamano
Created on: August 29, 2003 - 7:53 AM PDT
Description: I guess this "genre" grew out of romantic comedies featuring love triangles. Someone figured out he could up the ante by adding more girls. Usually a variety of attractive women begin hanging out with one nice/shy/nerdy guy through strange circumstances.

Tenchi Muyo: DVD Ultimate Edition - OVA Episodes 1-7 (2004)
Lucky guy: Tenchi Fan Service: Some Nudity Is this the one that started this trend? I'm not a fan. MANY spin-offs.
Oh My Goddess! DVD Vol. 1 (1993)
Lucky guy: Keiichi Morisato Fan Service: Moderate (Mostly Urd) OAV, Movie, Mini-Goddess spin-off. Not much harem tension, since sweet Belldandy and decent dude Keiichi are obviously destined to stay together. The movie is a epic fantasy romance!
Love Hina Vol. 1: Moving In (2001)
Not Rated
Lucky guy: Keitaro Urashima Fan Service: Mucho nudity (no details) Mostly sweet show with a good dose of magic realism. Central romantic arc driven by Keitaro's faulty memory. Uneven but fun.
Gatekeepers Vol. 1: Open the Gate! (2001)
Not Rated
Lucky guy: Shun Ukiya Fan Service: Not much Gonzo's animation was so hyped that I was quite disappointed with this one. It's a harem situation but does Shun really deserve to be captain to all these cute girls? The whole show just annoyed me to hell.
Mahoromatic: Automatic Maiden Vol. 1 - Combat Maiden (2003)
Not Rated
Lucky guy: Suguru Misato Fan Service: Mahoro and Shikijo Sensei are often NUDE! Nipples! A really sweet and well crafted show from GAINAX. Suguru is very smart and gallant. Great music.
Steel Angel Kurumi Vol. 1: Angel on My Shoulder (2002)
Lucky guy: Nakahito Fan Service: Moderate (bathing, Kurumi's assets) Steampunk robot maid harem show that ultimately failed to please. Perfect sensibility for a 7 year old, if it didn't have all that T&A.
Ai Yori Aoshi Vol. 1: Faithfully Yours (2003)
Not Rated
Lucky guy: Kaoru Hanabishi Fan Service: Not as much as Love Hina Like Ah, Megami-sama, the male and female leads are obviously meant for each other. The other girls in the harem mostly provide comic relief. Nicely drawn and well acted. Great OP and ED.
Vandread Vol. 1: Enemy Engaged! (2000)
Lucky guy: Hibiki Tokai I haven't seen this series yet. Another harem SF actioner.
Golden Boy Vol. 1: Treasure Hunt (2002)
Lucky guy: Kintaro Oe Fan Service: Lotsa underwear Actually, Kintaro is a serial haremizer. He wanders all over Japan, forming platonic relationships with beautiful women of all ages and sizes. They DO come together to help him in the end. 2 vol. OAV.
El Hazard OVA (Disc 1 of 2) (1995)
Not Rated
dpowers said: "el hazard's harem is extended, but it can't be ignored as it's related creatively to tenchi and it has groups of supporting women in turkish garb. the OVA i think is proto-harem."
Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play - Suzaku Box (Season 1) (Disc 1 of 4) (1995)
Not Rated
Lucky girl: Miaka Yuuki Fan Service: Not much Reverse harem! Miaka becomes the Priestess of Suzaku and is surrounded by a troop of hunky warriors. Even the drag queen Nuriko harbors a crush on Miaka. The show is a lot of fun at first, then bogs down.
Fruits Basket vol.1: A Great Transformation? (2002)
Not Rated
Lucky girl: Tohru Honda Fan Service: The guys are nekkid when they revert to human form. At last a great reverse harem show. This one made me cry. A lot. I loved it.
