Fruits Basket vol.1: A Great Transformation? (2002)
12345678910
Not Rated
In nearly every episode the creators explore some aspect of what it means to be emotionally mature. The target audience here is young, but adults may find what the series creators are trying to teach kids interesting.
Junkers Come Here (1995)
12345678910
Not Rated
Wonderful family movie that explores the relationship between a girl and her estranged parents.
If I See You In My Dreams - OVA Series (2003)
12345678910
Not Rated
Romantically hopeless 20-somethings struggle with--the opposite sex. Seems to be broadcasting the message: "hey, it's OK you're in your 20s and still have never had a girl/boyfriend."
Ah! My Goddess!: The Movie (2001)
12345678910
  More relationship drama
RahXephon Vol. 1: Threshold (2003)
12345678910

  More existential drama Eva-style.
Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 0:1 (1995)
12345678910
You knew this'd be in here...
Neo Ranga Vol. 1: A God is Risen (2003)
12345678910
Not Rated
Interesting exploration of a theme: the sisters end up with control of a God living in Tokyo. What now? What do they do with it? How does it change them?
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (1998)
12345678910
Wondeful doomed-lovers drama based on the question: once you give up your humanity, can you ever get it back?
Grave of the Fireflies (Collector's Edition) (1988)
12345678910

I have seen this several times now, and each time I find something else of interest. The relationship between Seita, Setsuko, the aunt and her boarders is well developed here...
Niea Under 7 Vol. 1: Poor Girl Blues (2000)
12345678910
Not Rated
Curry wars and wacky bathwater aside, there are some interesting moments in this series spent exploring Mayuko's character.
Night on the Galactic Railroad (1985)
12345678910

Classic Miyazawa piece turned into classic Anime. Wonderful!
Patlabor 2 (1993)
12345678910

The TV series and movies are a pretty mixed field--giant robots, monsters, evil plots, comedy, and drama. I picked the second movie here because of its exploration of Tsuge's character and the question he poses to humanity.
Sugar - A Little Snow Fairy Vol. 1: Sweet Mischief (2003)
12345678910
Not Rated
Overpowering cuteness aimed at the little ones. It's interesting to see what the series creators are attempting to teach the little ones.
Angel's Egg (1982)
12345678910

  Art film! Art film!
The Dog of Flanders (1975)
12345678910

Wonderful exploration of it's characters strengths and flaws, particularly between Nello, his grandfather, and the miller.
Blue Gender vol. 1 (2001)
12345678910
I suppose this is mainly a sci-fi monster series, but I found its dramatic aspects much more captivating, particularly the way Yuji's character changes over the course of the series.
Arjuna Vol. 1: Rebirth (2002)
12345678910
Again, not primarily a drama, but it has interesting dramatic bits. I love the exploration of the other characters here--the relationship between Tokio and his father, the relationship between Juna and her father, and their math teacher's life story.
GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka vol. 1 (2002)
12345678910
Okay, so I'm reaching for this one too. But sprinkled in among the absurdly exaggerated events and comic posturing are some interesting explorations of the student's problems.
Legend of Black Heaven Vol. 1: Rock Bottom (2000)
12345678910
Another stretch. But the bits about the salaryman's life at home are interesting...
